coming together is a beginning staying together is progress and working together is success

-Henry Ford

Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task most effectively and efficiently. On the year nine camp to Kalbarri myself and the other students that attended all learnt how to work in teams better with one another having to cook and do different activities with one another such as abseiling, rock climbing and putting tents up and down. By taking part in these activities, I learnt how to communicate more effectively with group members to get things done faster, how to divide roles to get things done and also many new skills.

When we first started cooking in our groups of three on the first two nights all three of us would begin to cut up the items one by one without talking about how we could divide the roles evenly and do multiple different things at once. This method of cooking proved slow for our group as we found ourselves starting to cook something just as others were finishing. After those first two nights, realising that how we cooked was slow and inefficient, our group decided to change up what we did and started talking about who would do what and when, and each night we allocated someone to be in charge and make sure we were keeping on track.

This was similar in how we worked as a team to put our tents up and down except that because of our experience with the cooking group we were able to do this faster and learnt to divide roles sooner. Another skill that I improved on from setting up tents was helping out others when they needed it or once I had finished packing up my stuff. Not only did I learn how to work in teams better from those activities, the day we abseiled, and rock climbed in and out of a gorge also taught me how to work in a team better.

When abseiling, we practised teamwork as we all worked together to distribute food, water and other items between ourselves which required us all to communicate effectively with one another so that nothing was left behind. Another aspect of teamwork we improved on when abseiling was our encouragement skills. We were supportive of everyone when they went down, especially for those people who were scared to have a go, and this helped or group to bond and become more of a team.

This was like when we rock climbed out of the gorge except that I learnt how to belay the rope for the other people in my group. By belaying for others, I had to work as a team with the people at the bottom calling and listening for when someone was ready. Overall, the camp to Kalbarri allowed for me, and others who went to learn and improve on their teamwork skills while still having fun and experiencing new experiences.
