The idea of this science project was to design an earthquake resistant building capable of withstanding an earthquake simulation. The catch was that the building could only be made out of a limited supply of spaghetti and blue tack. It was also required to be at least 60cm tall, a maximum of a 30c.x30cm base, and hand to have a flat surface of at least 5cmx5cm on the top.

Engineering Overview

The engineering process consisted of researching, designing, constructing, testing, and reconstructing until we built a model good enough to satisfy the harsh criteria set. I would make one major change to the beginning of this process, and that would be to give some tutoring to the students about how to build a structure, rather then letting them do there own research. Things like cross bracing and center of gravity should have been taught by the teachers so that the students had a minimum amount of initial knowledge.

Collaboration

Whilst working in a pair, it was easy for both of us to focus on similar things, working together to make the process run smoothly. Unlike other groups with three or four people, working on the same thing was an effective way to result in efficient and high quality work. We researched together, built the tower together, and finished the Stile together.
