Year 10 English – Positive Leadership

In Year 10 English this year, we were given the chance to do a practical assessment of a Group Dramatic Performance. This task allowed us to not only create a scene but to discover and display our best capabilities. During our six-week dramatic process, I showcased my leadership skills in ethical ways. I should that I can be an effective leader, who can help others achieve the best. For the task, my assigned job for our group of 4, was to handle the scriptwriting aspect of the dramatic performance. I took this as an opportunity to write a comedic yet informative script that I knew would showcase the talent and abilities of the others in my group along with myself. However, when writing our script, I found myself visualizing prior dramatic choices for our scene. This means I could easily know how to help and fix any issues we had.

Being the most experienced performer in the group, I was cast as the leader in the way that my fellow group members came to me for advice on performing. When they would ask me if a choice, they were making was good or not, I would think to myself first, ‘would this be effective in the storytelling aspects of the scene?’ and if yes, I would say to go for it. If the answer was no, I would not criticize or judge, but rather show alternative ways to approach the situation so I was seen more as a leader and not a boss, because there is a very significant difference. A boss tells you what to do, and a leader shows you what to do. With the effects of showing and not telling, comes easy communication and understanding of what is wanting to be portrayed. I displayed leadership in our dramatic scene by undertaking these actions.
