Project Utopia

This year for Project Utopia we are redesigning Fremantle Port. Project Utopia was inspired by a book that we are studying, The Giver. In this book, the people think they are living in a perfect world in their community, but this is far from a utopia because the community has no freedom and choice, people in this community will not thrive. So, we want to redesign Fremantle to make it a more livable place. My group consisted of Jinning, Ved, Madi & Dylan, and our idea was to make a cable cart that will overlook the Swan River.

The talk

Here in All Saints, we have a once life opportunity given by Mrs. Lockwood, to pitch some ideas to help redesign the Fremantle port. Mrs. Lockwood will pitch our ideas go to the Fremantle Community. Everyone in year 7 this year created a vision board to show Fremantle about our ideas and hopefully, will be in Fremantle in the future.

Global Goals

In our project, we wanted the cable cart to be sustainable and incorporate the UN Global Goals. In our design of the cable cart, we thought about 2 different UN global goals; Goal 8- decent work and economic growth and Goal 9- Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. To make our cable cart sustainable we used Low E glass and copper plating. Low E Glass stands for Low emission glass and Copper Plating is made in a way that it does not produce greenhouse gasses. We will also use a very small amount of fossil fuels to power the cable carts because the most powerful and most reliable compared to the other.

These is the global goals

Capabilities factors

While doing the vision board we were thinking about our capabilities factors that was a key part to completing our vision board. One of the most used capabilities factors was organized. We used organized by setting out our work so everyone accesses it. We also used communication by making choices together as a group, so there would be no arguments in the process of making the vision board.

challenges

The challenges we have were how high is the cable cart, why does Fremantle needs a cable cart, when does the cable run, these are some of the questions we were arguing about. But every problem we face as a group we find a way to solve it, and this is how we finally finished with everyone on board with the idea.

Why does Fremantle need a cable cart?

The cable cart will help the residents and visitors to Fremantle Port by providing an amazing view over the water. This attraction will encourage visitors to Fremantle and promote the unique culture and lifestyle of this port city.

The artistic talents of the traditional owners of this land – the Whadjuk people will be displayed on the cable cart. So, when people look at the cable cart, they can learn the traditional stories and history of the oldest culture on earth. E.g., the Waguyl and how it created the Swan River.

The cable cart will also boost the economy of the Fremantle port through tourism. People will come from within WA, from other states, and from around the world to experience the lifestyle and culture of Fremantle Port.

Overall

During the presentation, my group spoke clearly and covered all the points that were important in our project. I think my group did well in the research and the vision board because we work as a group and always try to help each other with different things.

What to improve for next time?

I think what I would like to improve on is my speaking skills because I was speaking softly and a bit fast. I would also want my group to work and communicate better because sometimes we would argue and disagree and then we talk over each other.
