Project Utopia

We began working on Project Utopia during Term 2. We learned a lot from this project and it helped us improve our knowledge and skills. It was planned to move the Fremantle Port to Kwinana, the port covers a large area, so we would need to build a large space as well. Because we wanted the area to resemble an utopia, which is an ideal place or a situation where everything is perfect, the project was given the name Project Utopia. So we made every effort to create it as a utopia. This page will tell you more about my journey and experience with this project.

The Giver

A young child named Jonas lives in a world free of crime and grief in The Giver, an interesting morality tale. Children are given their occupations at the age of twelve, which they will train for and work at for the remainder of their life. A group known as The Elders selects every element of your life, from your parents to your partner. The civilization Jonas lives in is considered to as a Utopia and is seen to be the ideal setting. We tried our best to create as ideal a space as we could for our Fremantle project.

Liveability

After the giver, We spent a term studying liveability in Hass. When we investigated this, we discovered the various lifestyles people lead in different nations, towns, and locations. To start investigating and incorporating other areas’ ideas for how to make them more liveable into Project Utopia, we had to learn about them. But before that, we took a tour to the location itself, Fremantle Port.

Trip To Fremantle Port

The entire year 7 cohort went on a trip to Fremantle port. We learnt about the historical value of the places and filled out a booklet. We also to a bus to see how big the port was and it was massive. This trip was very helpful because we quickly realised that we would need to place a lot of things that are eco-friendly and that can consume all of the space.

Vision Boards

We were divided into groups in class, and mine included Leticia Avery, Fletcher Adams, Ruby Squire, and myself. On our boards, we would have four or five different concepts. We had to look at eco-friendly concepts that we might include in our redesign. We would then build vision boards using our ideas, which we would then show for all the grandparents on grandparents day. Our main 5 concepts were What places can be provided for fun and recreation?, How will people travel from  ‘A’ to ‘B’, How will the city be sustainable?, 4.What housing should be there and who will live there?. We created ideas for all these questions and put them in our vision board we had to show our ideas by pictures and we weren’t allowed to use words. Then we showcased our work on grandparents day which went very smoothly.

CoSpace or Handcraft

For this part the teacher divided us into 2 different groups. The main point of this was to create a visual representation of the different aspects of the project. The handcraft people built a 3d model of the port while the CoSpace people built different parts of the project such as the town square or the waterpark. At the end we presented this to our parents and that was the end of Project Utopia.

What I have learnt

This project taught me many things. It helped me improve my collaboration skills. My public speaking skills, My organisation skills. Overall this project was a great learning experience for me. And I hope that our plans for the port happen.
