20 Dollar Boss

We did not get very far with our $20 boss project. The product we were going to sell were tie dye tote bags, which wasn’t a good product, as many people we surveyed did not want to bye our product, and there was also a lot of competition between other tote bag businesses. Half out group wasn’t even interested in tote bags, and we found no enjoyment in preparing our business. It was way too late to change our ideas, so we stuck with it. We didn’t get to pitch our product idea, because we barely did any work in class, and only got to create a logo, a drawn prototype and an unfinished pitch, which I had done. Although we didn’t really enjoy $20 dollar boss, and didn’t get very far with it, there were also some positives that we got out of it. I learnt that it isn’t very easy to think of a product idea that is original and creative, and that it is quite difficult to work with a team that has very different ideas to you.

When term 4 begun, the rest of my group quit 20 dollar boss, so i merged with a few other people who had also left a group, and we restarted the project. At first, we were thinking of selling album covers on a sheet of glass, as one of our group members, Jess, had already started that product, but after a couple weeks, we had to stop the idea, because it went against copyright rules. We spent a couple more weeks thinking of different products to sell, but there was never one product that we would all agree on, and a while later, we thought that maybe if there was no product for us to sell, we could do a service instead, like a carwash! It was a great idea, and we would get heaps of profit for it, but eventually we kind of forgot about it and got less interested in doing a carwash.

We had nothing to sell. Most of the markets had already been, and we had nothing to sell there, so we decided that we would no longer sell anything. The teachers said that instead, we had to write a reflection to display at showcase, so we all started to write our own reflections on what we had done wrong throughout $20 boss and how we could improve, but we then got bored so we thought that maybe we could just sell a few little candles at the showcase, just so that we actually had something to show there.

Our business name is called Spring Scents, and we are going to make a few candles in glass jars, and have them in a couple different scents. It is not the best product to sell, but it is way too late to start anything big, as the showcase is this Friday.

I think the thing that we definitely could have improved on is our organisation and problem solving skills, as we were not at all organised when finalising a product to sell, and we also didn’t know how to solve the problem of not having anything to sell, so now we are rushed to make a couple last-minute candles. Our group didn’t discuss much about what we all wanted to do, which has taught me how important it is to collaborate with group members. If we were ever to do this project again, i would definitely try to use my time more wisely, so that we were able to produce a good product for the markets.
