In HASS this term we were given a task to write a letter to our MP about an issues that concern us. We had to write a 200 – 500 word letter about how to solve this issue. I chose to write a letter about the Great Barrier Reef Bleaching because it is something that I am very passionate about and I think its a very important issue.

Dear Mr Wilson,

I am Isla Mcdonald from All saints College in Perth, I am writing to inform you that I am deeply concerned by the coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef.

As you would be aware, the Australian and Queensland governments are jointly investing more than $4 billion in protecting the Reef. This includes more than half of the funding going towards improving water quality through tackling erosion, improving land condition and reducing nutrient and pesticide run-off into the ocean.

I argue that not enough money is being invested to protect the reef from global warming and the resultant ocean temperature increase that causes bleaching of the coral. $4 billion won’t scratch the surface.  Global warming is getting increasingly worse and now 91% of the coral reef is bleached. In the last 5 years there have been 3 mass bleaching events alone. This is extremely alarming because of the amount of marine life that will suffer because of the reef deteriorating.

The Great Barrier reef is one of the 7 wonders of the natural world. This means that it is a huge tourist attraction and has a great income of money, but, if the reef continues to bleach and coral to die, less tourists will visit the reef and less income will be made off of tourism, and people will lose their jobs and be unable to work at the reef anymore. The Great Barrier Reef is currently making $6.4 billion each year, by losing the reef all this money will be lost and the money gone into the reef preservation will be wasted.

Once again, I ask you as my elected representative, to not just support $4 billion being invested in the Great Barrier Reefs preservation but to actively campaign for further investment, as it is a valuable and rare ecosystem, home to lots of unique marine life, a huge tourist attraction and a valuable part of Australia’s culture. Please help save the Great Barrier Reef.

Yours Sincerely,

Isla Mcdonald
