The Giver

During the English class, we learnt about a book named The Giver, which we had to read over the holiday. This presented us with an understanding of the concept of a Utopian society. The definition of the term ‘Utopia’ is a perfect world where nothing goes wrong and everything is perfect. However, in the book, we learn about the main character’s Utopia which is later revealed to be something more like a dystopia. We then had an assessment about the giver and propaganda posters to portray the concept of Jonas’ community.

Liveability

In the Humanities class, we learnt about many factors of livability. We learnt about what makes a community more liveable and pleasing to others. This assisted us in making our presentations and ideas as we made sure to make the area more liveable. We watched a movie named ‘Urbanized’ which talked about cities of the world and how they are trying new ways to make them more liveable which could inspire us to do similar things. We learnt about how some things will improve cities and how slums are a problem in low-income areas. We learnt to be multi-modal to all citizens ensuring that we took care of everyone unbiased.

Futures of Fremantle

At the very start of this, we had representatives of the Fremantle government come to talk to the year group about improving the area. We made sure to ask questions about things we were unsure of. The people showed us some slides presenting the current problems in Fremantle. They discussed ways we could make solutions efficiently that could possibly also make the government some money. They used the example of having a giant water park but they said that this would not be very sustainable and wouldn’t make much money.

Global Goals

We related all that we did to the thirteen global goals. The global goals are goals that the UN hopes to complete by 2050 to ensure worldwide peace and to help people at a disadvantage. We made sure that we included the global goals in our solution to make sure that it would help contribute to helping the global goals be achieved easily by 2050. By doing this, we made sure that we had more things to talk about in not only our vision boards but also our resolutions.

Going to Fremantle

We left on the bus to travel around Fremantle where we went to learn about the Aboriginal culture in Fremantle and many other things. We had a booklet that we filled out so that we could complete our understanding of the area. We did a lot of walking in the area and I found many things about the area very interesting. One of these things was the story of the Waargle and Yondock the crocodile. It is an Aboriginal story about how Yondock the crocodile and the Waargle fought. The remains of Yondock are a barrier that prevents salt water to come into the fresh water. Unfortunately, the construction of the Fremantle Port consisted of blowing the limestone barrier up.

Vision Boards

In humanities and innovate-Ed we made a vision board consisting of many photos specifically chosen with significance relating to our solution to make Fremantle more liveable. We had many features to create our vision board as we had to fill out a detailed table which assisted in helping us in developing our solution. The photos would be innovative and creative ensuring that all of our ideas were original and innovative.

Making Our Models

During innovatED as well as HASS we started to research our topics and the question we were going to answer. After the stage of research, we were introduced to Co-Space which was an online platform that allowed you to build and create things. We had to choose between making a physical model and making a Co-Space. I chose to make a Co-Space with my peer Jack. We answered the question, ‘How will people get from point A to point B?’. This consisted of making innovative transport that was multimodal and sustainable.

Presentations

In the week before we had to present we were allocated into groups. These groups would be the ones that we would do our speeches with. We all made palm cards which were not full paragraphs but instead, were simple notes and retakes of each chapter of our speech. We practised them until we got to a point where we didn’t even need them. In the end, we presented our ideas to the parents and some officials planning. I enjoyed the experience and it has taught me many things, some consisting of resilience and collaboration.
