Woodwork Reflection

My goals

My goals when beginning my woodwork experiences were clearly set out. Our task was to create a spinning top handle with our own creative design. One of my goals was to create a design that was visually pleasing but also comfortable to hold. I used the capability of creativeness and put my design thinking skills to work. My final design was a snake-like cobra that bent around but also was comfortable to hold for longer periods of time. Another one of my goals is to use the capability organization. I used this capability to be on top of my work and do everything in stages. Once I did this I was able to complete my work a week early.

My design

My design of the handle was a cobra (snake) which in which I used the scroll saw to cut concave curves. My design also involved thinking of the person who it was for and if or if not it would be comfortable in their hands. Once I completed sawing my design we sanded it and engraved a message on it and finally applied finishing paint.

My feelings towards the subject

Overall I had a very enjoyable time in woodwork, I was also able to learn new things that will be useful in my life. If I got the chance I would definitely do it again.

Aquaponics and Sustainable food Reflection

In term 2, I began my project and journey in Aquaponics. I start with working with the chickens for the first couple of weeks where we came up with ideas to benefit our plants, worms, fish, and chickens themselves. After a few weeks, I moved into working with wicking beds which is an easy and sustainable tool used to grow plants.

My Goals

When beginning this process we had to implement goals, values, and the design thinking process. Once we had our goals in mind we had to involve our college capabilities (as seen below).

My first goal is using the capability organization, my goal for looking after my wicking bed was to create a timetable to be able to know exactly what we need to do every week without instruction. Through doing this our group was able to be very organized and through this, we were able to get our jobs done quicker. Another one of my goals used capability Collaboration, our group had to use the collaboration to be able to sort out which aspects of looking after our wicking beds. We also used collaboration when making our table that we would later use. Overall having set goals helped us be organized and better at what we do.

Problems that we came by

One problem that we came by was sorting out how we would water it on some weeks because sometimes we were both away and had to get other groups to water and look after our wicking bed. Another problem that we came by was getting debris out of our bed without digging up our plants, this was a struggle because if we did dig up our plants we would deal damage to them.

Conclusion

Overall I enjoyed my time in Aquaponics and would definitely do it again, it was a great experience that I would definitely remember.

Fixed and Growth Mindsets…

Demonstrating a fixed mindset can be unhealthy while it also can help your mind to understand what a roadblock is, it can teach you when you have to stop but overall people try to avoid falling into this. The time I demonstrated this mindset was when I was playing tennis, although I was in a couple of competitions eventually the sport got boring and I lost the enjoyment in the sport, so I decided to stop because I knew that I couldn’t do any better.

Having a growth mindset is the preferred mindset have in life situations because it teaches you how to learn from failure and expand your comfort zones, when I showed this was when I had to write an entire script for our class play, in the beginning, I was stuck and had no ideas but still, I persevered and eventually got it done and it was amazing. I also got a reward after. Having a Growth mindset is basically being able to use a skill that is highly popularized called flearning, this basically means that you have a skill to take a failure and learn from it. So the lesson here to learn is that having a growth mindset is better than having a fixed one.
