I have chosen to design a costume for Delores as in the musical, I will be playing her. Delores is Mirabel’s oldest cousin, and she is a very polite, calm person in the show. She has the power of super hearing, and her weakness is keeping secrets.
Background info:
Delores Madrigal is the second oldest of the Madrigal cousins. Delores’s gift is the gift of hearing. she can hear things said a mile away whether she likes it or not, and sometimes I wonder whether it was a good gift. She is the first-born child of Felix and Pepa and has a younger brother Antonio.
Elements of design:
Shape/ Texture –
I interpreted this softness in her character into my own costume. I used a soft white shirt to represent the peace she felt, and the red flowery skirt shows how she really feels. The flowers are also a big part of the family which we tend to see a lot later in the show. I wanted the design to have different textures and looks as it gives a bit of diversity in the outfit. The top had to have frills because it makes her unique. She feels chaotic and overwhelmed from knowing everyone’s secrets and for not being able to ‘turn it off’ I thought the flowers really expressed Delores’s character.
Colour –
I knew I wanted the skirt to be red or orange to reflect how she feels, and I wanted a white top to show on the outside she is this soft, calm, and collected person but on the inside, she is overwhelmed from knowing everything, and I felt the flowers really expressed this. I also added a red bandanna because in the movie, she has a red headband but the bandanna fitted the character I had turned her into. There was a lot of flowers on the dress, and I think this shows that she is feeling 1 million different emotions but can’t show them.
