On Saturday the 14th of September, my partner Rebecca and I competed at the BP Debating competition at Shenton College. The competition ran from 8:30 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon. First of, we attended a BP workshop. At first I was so confused because I had never done this style of debating before, but I soon got the hang of it. In BP, there are 2 benches, the Government bench (affirmative) and the Opposition bench (negative). Then there is a opening half and closing half in each bench. You get randomly allocated your spot. And you only get your topic half an hour before the actual debate started, and you have no technology to aid your preparation. At first it was hard and very stressful to think on the spot, but as time went on and as we gained more experience, it became a lot easier. This day was a valuable experience for me as I learnt that it is actually really easy to think on the spot and I also learnt many new strategies for debating that I can now apply to my normal debates.
