In art this term we learnt about brutalism. First we looked at brutalist buildings and the certain ways of the unique design of those buildings, this gave us a better understanding of brutalism. Then we started the planning of our project. We created multiple different lego brutalist sculptures, and took photos of those sculptures. After we made our final design of the lego, we ran into some troubles while doing so, but we resolved it. Then we made the silicon moulds of the lego, and once it was dried and taken out we poured concrete into it.

Through-out this project we learnt a lot of things, and had to deal with multiple situations.

We spent three weeks researching the topic – brutalism. Research was a big part of this project, as it gave us a better understanding for when we made our sculptures. Before this project, I never heard of brutalism, so I found it fun and interesting to learn about something new. The designs of the buildings is very unique, and can look quite nice. I preferred the brutalist houses then the buildings and sculptures.

We ran into multiple problems through-out the course of this project, this gave me lots of opportunities to overcome and solve the problems.

The first issue I ran into was when I was making the Lego sculpture. The three drafts I made were made from a special sort of Lego, and when I went to make the draft I liked the most, there wasn’t any of the Lego I used. The second issue I ran into was when we were testing the walls. We poured water into the walls to see if it leaked, and the walls kept progressively leaking after many tries of fixing it. One more issues we ran into was that the concrete sculptures kept breaking or snapping when taking it out of the moulds.

For the first issue, I first tried looking for more Lego, or asking others for their left over Lego pieces. This didn’t really work as there still wasn’t enough to make my desired Lego sculpture. So I ended up using a different type of Lego, and trying my best to recreate it with the other type. I couldn’t completely recreate my favourite draft, so I ended up changing it a little so it still looked nice while adapting to the changes.

For the second issue, after trying to patch up the leaks, I didn’t give up, and ended up lathering hot glue all over the edges of the walls to minimise any leaks. This didn’t work entirely the second time, so I ended up adding more around almost every part of the walls. This ended up working and made sure that there wasn’t any leaks for the silicon to spill out of when we did the moulds.

The last issue was probably the biggest issue for a lot of students. To overcome the issue of the concrete sculptures breaking, the teacher tested different ratios for the concrete to make it stronger. Another thing we did was get rid of all overhangs on the Lego sculptures. The overhangs in the Lego sculptures were very fragile, so getting rid of them lowered the chance of it breaking.

I learn a lot of things through-out the course of this project.

I learnt about brutalism, and what it is. I found looking at all the different types of brutalist buildings very interesting. I learnt a lot about the different types of brutalist buildings and the architects who make those buildings. I also learnt how to make moulds out of silicon, and how to evenly separate silicon pinkysil evenly. I also learnt a bit of problem solving, as shown from the paragraph above.

I was quite happy with the final product. We ended up doing it twice, but I think the first one I did looked the best.
