Progress Update 1
In humanities this year we have been working through the four different units of HASS. For the end of year showcase, we’ve been given the opportunity to choose to focus on either economics, history, geography or civics, and produce and end product to contribute to the showcase.
The topic that my group chose to focus on was history.
The steps we have completed so far are:
- Decided on a essential question.
- Researched a range of different sources for information on our topic.
- Completed an annotated bibliography of 10 sources between us.
- Started to gather resources and information to use on our display.
Our plan for continuing our project includes:
- By the end of week one, we plan to have finished our planning for the displays.
- Also by the end of week 1 we want to have all the resources we need to make it.
- By the end of week 2 we want to have started our display.
- By the end of week 3 we want to have finished one of our displays.
- From week 4-5 we want to spend the time completing and polishing our displays.
Some challenges we have faced are:
- changing our idea after already doing a week of work- we decided that we didn’t want to go forward with our previous idea because already I a lot of people were doing it and we weren’t really that interested in it so we weren’t that motivated to do the work.
- By changing our idea to something we are more interested in we are more motivated to complete the work. A negative is that we had to redo all our previous work but it was worth.
- The form we were using to submit our bibliography didn’t work so we solved it by just using a word document.
Progress Update 2
Overview
My group and I have now finalised our plan for our end of year Humanities project. We will be creating a display consisting of a pin-up board detailing the planning of the 9/11 attacks and the effects on the community and individuals involved in the attacks by using visual sources and our written research. As the aim of this is to teach our audience information they didn’t know beforehand, we will be working really hard together to incorporate feedback which we have received to achieve this. We have been told we need to make the presentation both interesting and engaging, whilst also serving as a valid teaching tool with well-researched information on display.
We are planning for our display to look like our take on a ‘Murder Board’ like one which you would see in movies with all the suspects and evidence pinned around the board with red strings connecting everything. We are going to use the research we have gathered and pictures we’ve found which show information surrounding the attacks and from September 11th, specifically about the attackers planning and stories from particular individuals effected by the attacks.
Research
We have spent a lot of our time research our topic thoroughly so we can ensure the information we are using is factually correct. Researching has made it easy for us to decide what we think is relelvant for our project and we have narrowed it dwon to two different sides of the attacks we want to show the story behind: the attackers and the victims.
We have watched videos, listened to interviews and read articles to gather get as many personal stories from the victims of the attack as we can who all have different perspectives and levels of involvemnt with the attack for examples journalist documenting the attacks, relatives of people who died in the attack and first responders. We have even managed to get in contact with John Mahoney, someone who was in the World Trade Centre towers on September 11th.
We have also used a variety of websites to get information on the attackers such as specific names (e.g. Mohamed Atta and Ziad Jarrah), their backstory and upbringing and ways they communicated with each other while planning and on the day of the attacks.
Timeline
Things we have achieved since the last progress update are as follows:
- Organised a zoom meeting with a contact of Mr Basell, who experienced the attack on World Trade Centre first hand.
- Prepared a series of questions to for the interview with Mr John Mahoney to ask him about his personal experience with the attacks.
- Collected information about the attack to display on our board and also gathered picture sources for the visual aspect of our display.
- We created a plan to roughly describe how the layout of the display is going to look.
- Planned the materials we are going to need to purchase before the exhibition to assemble our display. We organised who is going to buy them and when and divided up the cost between us.
Our plan for continuing our project:
- Purchase all the materials we need to buy for the display.
- Hold the interview with John Mahoney, making sure to record so we can listen to it and use the information given to us.
- Print off the resources and pictures gathered and organise them so we are ready to set up our display on the day of the exhibition.
