Interhouse Sport – Coaching

2021 – Year 10

In term 3 of Year 10, I was given the opportunity to coach a team in Interhouse sport. I was very excited and keen to coach as I had enjoyed participating in Interhouse sport since year 7 and embraced the opportunity to coach a team a year before I normally could. Throughout Semester 2 I coached both a Year 7 and year 8 team.

2022 – Year 11

Since starting to coach teams in Term 3 of Year 10, I have since coached the Year 8 Mixed Soccer Team during Semester One of this year and plan to continue coaching interhouse sport through the rest of Year 11 and into Year 12.

Reflection of Coaching so far at All Saints College

I discovered my passion and love for coaching children’s sport though my ventures outside of school, but it has been further strengthened by my time coaching various teams and age groups in Interhouse Sport at All Saints. Coaching has taught me that I enjoy planning for teams and encouraging and assisting other people how to reach their full potential. I enjoy sharing the excitement when my team wins, and seeing their good sportsmanship and feeling proud of their reaction when they congratulate the other team on their win if we loose.

I also discovered though my time participating and coaching Interhouse Sport that I enjoy bringing people up, whether cheering them on, passing the ball to them to give them the chance to score, or giving them the encouragement they need to try something that maybe they are scared to do, maybe being placed in a different position in netball for example, and feeling proud and excited for them when they discover they are good at that role and find passion for it.

I have learned how to manage a team, making sure we have the correct number of players on the court, and how to score and umpire different games. I also thrive to be the friendly and fun, supportive coach that I enjoyed having when I played Interhouse sport. It improved my leadership skills, giving feedback on how to impove our game, and supporting and shouting to the girls/boys from the side-line, encouraging them to play. I am enjoying being a leader for my younger Forrest Family and it is helping me to increase my own self confidence.

Overall I very much enjoy coaching, and the supportive and gently competitive atmosphere that surrounds Interhouse sport, makes me enjoy coaching teams there even more. I would recommend to anyone to try coaching an Interhouse sport team as you learn so much about yourself and the game you are coaching.
