INNOVATE ED SEMESTER 1 YEAR 8

My InovatED project for Semester 1 in 2021 was Precious Plastics. Precious plastics aims to recycle used plastic and turn them into useful items. We do this by shredding the plastic then melting them into moulds. We mainly used the capabilities of ‘EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION and ‘RESILIENCE’. We had to use effective communication because of the necessary safety precautions. For example, I mainly used the injector. This process requires someone to screw the mould shut, then carry it to the injector, screw it on steady, pull the lever, unscrew and take the plastic out of the mould. We would get together before we started and made sure we were all clear about what steps each of us were doing so we wouldn’t accidentally get in each other’s way and so we could maximise efficiency. We used resilience because the projects did not always have a 100% success rate and when a project came out wrong, we had to find out what we did wrong; whether we put the plastic in too late or an un-tight screw. We then had to fix the problem and make sure we didn’t do it again. One of the obstacles was not all of our moulds working.

an image of me and my friends in front of the injector
-TOP IMAGE- an example of the products the injector mould makes
-BOTTOM LEFT- this is the oven we put the big 3D moulds into
-BOTTOM MID- this is the shredder, we put bits of plastic into and it shreds into pieces we can put in moulds
-BOTTOM RIGHT- this the injector, i manly used this. you put plastic in a funnel in the front which was melted then injected into 2D shape moulds like coasters
