Out Door ED Muir reflection

In this unit, we covered snorkelling, orienteering and archery. At the start of the unit, we learnt about orienteering we learnt how to use a compass correctly. This meant learning how to put “Fred in the shed” and how to calculate the real distance between two spots on a map. Fred in the shed means that you should line the red part of the compass up with the north. We started this by learning all the safety things about a compass these include:

  • Exercise regularly to keep yourself in good physical condition
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after the event to reduce the risk of dehydration
  • Warm up thoroughly before orienteering
  • Incorporate stretching before orienteering
  • Wear appropriate shoes

And then we also had to learn about the general knowledge about a compass and how to use it these include:

  • Pick up the compass and hold it flat in front of you
  • Be sure that the direction of the travel arrow points straight ahead
  • Rotate yourself, keeping an eye on the magnetic needle
  • When the red end lines up exactly with the orienting arrow stop

After we learnt the basics, we did multiple runs around the school. We got given a map with numbers on it and then we had to use our compass and find the letters. Once we found the letter then we would have to write it down on another sheet. Then we would come back to class and see if we got the letters right. After we got out general skills with a compass down then we went to Manning Park and Piney Lakes for the new orienteering course they have there. It was the same as we did at school you would have to find different letters around the park. After all this, we did a one-day excursion to Jorgensen National Park. We did the same thing and had to try and find letters. This was the hardest one because you had to make sure that you understood all the safety and general knowledge about the compass.

During all the orienteering we did archery on Fridays. We started off by going 10m and then gradually got further and further away from the target the aim was to get as close to the middle as we can. To get good at archery we had to make sure we knew the technique which was breathed in and then when you shoot breathe out. We started off by shooting at the target and trying to get as close to the centre as possible. Once we understood the technique and got better at shooting, we put balloons on the target and the first person in your group to hit it won. After that, we started to count our scores in groups and the idea was to get the most out of our group this was only for term 3 and ended at the end of term 3.

At the start of term 4, we started snorkelling the first thing we did is learn about the general safety around and in the water. This included:

  • Snorkelling is a buddy sport
  • Never turn your back on the ocean. There could be a big wave coming at you
  • Watch surf, current and surge on reefs/rocks
  • Enter and exit from a sandy beach area
  • Never swim against the current. Swim diagonally from it
  • Avoid murky water for safety and enjoyment
  • Duck dive under breaking waves to break their force
  • Chart, sunburst chart
