This semester in Outdoor Education – Lock I have developed many capabilities including organization, ethics, collaboration and loads more. In the Lock course, we participated in different activities such as Rock Climbing, Bush Cooking and a small 3-day camp where I used and developed these capabilities.

Organization –

On this camp, organization was a major part and mainly was useful when bringing our food. On this camp we had to organize all of our food and meals for the three days meaning if we weren’t organized and bring the right amount of food we would go hungry. We cooked in groups of 5 meaning we had to organize food in these groups, our group was fairly organized and managed to plan out all our meals early, meaning we had time to organize who got what and meant we weren’t stressing the day before. Overall us being prepared early really made our lives easier, it meant we all felt prepared and knew we weren’t missing something, overall making us feel more confident to go on camp.

Ethics –

This camp majorly consisted of ethics for the environment and focused on the key principles of Leave No Trace. Leave No Trace is a set of key principles that helps to leave as least of an impact on the environment when you’re doing something outdoors. These principles consist of things such as Camping on Durable and Disposing of Waste properly. Some other things we did were bring warm clothes so that we wouldn’t need a fire for long and wipe the dirt off our shoes to prevent the spread of Phytophthora dieback

Collaboration –
On the camp, we had to cook our food on the fire. As a group or two groups, we had to collaborate to make our fire to cook on and share it to make sure everyone got what they needed to cook cooked so that everyone could eat. We also had to collaborate when rafting as we were in rafts as 2’s, I was with Ben and we collaborated well, and we didn’t flip when going down the rapids.

Fishing –
In lock we also did a unit on fishing, we got taught how to rig, bait and cast a fishing rod and how to fillet a fish. With these skills, we went out to numerous locations such as Mt. Henry Bridge and practice fishing for a few hours.

Rock Climbing –
In this unit, we also got to learn to rock climb and how to belay safely, we climbed in groups of 3 and learned to work together when climbing. We started learning to climb at school and climbed at school and to finish this off we also to the Urban Jungle in Jandakot to try some higher different walls than at school and bouldering.
