What were the biggest things you learnt while completing this task?
There were many things I learnt whilst completing this task on Road Safety. I think one of the main things I learnt is how large of an issue youth drink driving is, when you think about drink driving you generally think about adults although when looking at the statistics for the youth it really shocked me. It has made me be more conscious when my older brother drives to parties or goes out. It has made me change my actions and I now make sure he is either not drinking or has a way planned to get home.
Another thing I learnt whilst completing this task was how many different strategies there are that you can follow to help make driving safer and how to avoid drink driving yourself or someone else. There are lots of different strategies that you may not think about at first. These strategies are very helpful to know and can save your life, some of these strategies are also extremely helpful to save loves ones lives around you so you can make sure they are safe.
What one piece of advice would you pass on to young drivers above all else?
One piece of advice I would pass on to young drivers is practicing the courage to just simply say “no”. This is so simple but can save your life, learning to say “no” to “friends” can prevent drinking or getting into a vehicle with a impaired driver, stay true to yourself and what you know about the consequences of drink driving and practice say “no”. Also remember anyone that forces you into a situation that you are extremely uncomfortable with or dangerous, they really aren’t your friend.
Pledge –
When I start driving I pledge to be mature enough to say no if I had planned not to drink and to not get into a car with someone under the influence. I will setup and follow strategies to mitigate the risks of the influence of alcohol. I will make sure I look after the people close to me and make sure when they are going somewhere after being somewhere with me to make sure they will only leave in a safe way to ensure as much as possible that they will arrive safely.

Road Safety Issue Why is it an issue for young people? (Statistics – age, gender, rural or metro, trends, government focus…) – Almost 4% of teens had driven while under the influence of alcohol in the past years – Young drivers 17x more likely to die in a crash when they have a blood alcohol concentration of .08% than when they have not been drinking – About one in 10 teens had been a passenger to a driver who was under the influence in the last year. – High School teens drive around 2.4 million times after drinking in a month 1 in 5 teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had some alcohol in their system in 2010. Most of these drivers (81%) had BACs higher than the legal limit for adults. |

Aim of the Campaign What results do you want to achieve? (A reduction in road fatalities and injuries due to…) To help educate young drivers of the issue of drink driving and to reduce the number of young drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol or being driven by someone under the influence of alcohol. This should reduce the number of young people getting into car accidents and losing lives that shouldn’t have to be lost. |
Key Information What information does the target group need to know? (Statistics, effects on the body, ways to stay safer…) Alcohol interferes with the brain’s communication pathways and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination. This lack of coordination and clear thinking can make driving extremely unsafe for you and other people on the road. |
The Safety Message or Slogan of the Campaign What is it? Why is this message going to suit young people? “Don’t let cheers, turn into tears”, this message is going to suit young people as it is sharp and catchy. It appeals to their values of not making people around them sound, it doesn’t relate to them directly but makes them think about the consequences that aren’t just going to affect them but the people around them when driving under the influence. |
Medium to be Used What is the best way to deliver the message? (Pamphlet, poster, newspaper or television advertisement targeted at high viewing times, mail out…. I am going to be using sway to deliver the message, as it is interactive and easy to understand. |
Communication Approach How will the campaign be presented to engage young people? (Humour, realistic, portrayal, consequences, role models…) I will use realistic and confronting stats throughout my campaign as well as using realistic and confronting images. This will give appeal to the audience’s emotion and human instincts and make them actually think about the issue. |
