Project Utopia Process and Reflection

The Future of Fremantle

Introduction

The project Utopia was a project assigned to us to redesign the Fremantle port. As a result of the port being moved to Quinana,  an opportunity for us to turn a boring port into a world rebound space where tourists can visit and people could live. During this project we had to consider many elements such as liveability, sustainability and global goals to create original, innovative ideas to transform this space.

Liveability

During geography in class, we learned about liveability concepts. We also learned about how certain services and places benefit liveability for different people. This benefited us by expanding our ideas to accommodate for people of all ages.

Initial Idea/ Vision Board Presentation

At this stage in the project we were put into groups to come up with initial ideas. We located where they would go in the port and then put the ideas on a vision board. The vision was a visual representation of our ideas through printing photos that represent and connect to what we would put in the redesigned port. This board helped us later on in the project by giving us ideas of what to put in our final designs. Most of the ideas on the vision boards were incorporated into the final design of the port. These vision boards were presented to Grandparents, teachers and visitors on grandparents day.

Class Plan

Once we had come up with our ideas in groups we had to make a big class plan of the redesigned Fremantle port. As a class, we decided which ideas we wanted in our final design and which ideas we did not. Then a group of students in our class planned and decided where places and infrastructure would be located.

Section Plan

Once the class plan was finished, all groups were assigned a section of the port in which we had to plan and design all the elements that were in it. During this stage we had to make a 3D model of our section using different materials to make the effect of grass and roads, trees and buildings. When put together this created a map of the port and created a visual representation of our ideas. We also used Cospace to create a virtual, 3D model of our (main) ideas. This was a way to create a detailed design of our ideas as well as being able to use the program to ‘walk through’ your section of the port with the new ideas.

Speeches

During English, we had to write, practise and present our ideas to the class. This tied into our oral presentation assessment while helping us with our presenting skills for the showcase so we could best present our ideas in an interesting, clear way. Though we presented our ideas as an oral presentation in class, during the showcase we more had a conversation with the visitors to keep them connected and interested.

Showcase

The showcase was what we were working towards throughout the whole project. This was where parents and experts came in and we presented our final ideas. Here we explained our process and presented our ideas using our physical 3D model, virtual Cospace model and speeches. We explained our ideas to visitors in more of a conversation style to keep them interested and make them feel more connected. This way they could comment and ask questions about things as we were going. Our group did not get too many questions we didn’t know the answer to and sometimes we just made up an answer that made sense as we hadn’t considered it during the planning process.

Our Idea

Our idea for our section was a massive multisport centre. This centre would include facilities for every sport, from swimming and water polo, to tennis and soccer. There would be three pools; one for racing and training, one for diving and warm ups during competitions and one for water polo. There would also be a grass running track for warm ups during track and field meets and training alongside a massive athletics stadium. There would be an oval for football, rugby, soccer, hockey and cricket. As well as a basketball and netball centre, velodrome, gym and tennis courts. There would also be a large variety of cafe’s, shops and playgrounds for younger children. To access the centre, there would be roads connecting to a car park as well as a train station at the west end of the centre. This would provide more space for people and athletes to get the training and support they need to thrive in their area, however that may be. This centre would also include many innovative ideas to produce energy, such as a track that produces kinetic energy, and the pool using geothermal energy for heating. The centre would also use a greywater system, this meaning water from the toilets and change rooms being recycled and cleaned, and then being used for the massive greenspaces in between the sporting facilities. The layout of the centre (As shown in photos) includes facilities in a somewhat circular shape, with paths connecting to every building and oval with greenspaces in between the paths in the empty spaces where athletes can relax during competitions, waiting for people to finish their workouts or whatever people feel as if they want to do with it.

Global Goals

UN Global Goals

During this project we were encouraged to include global goals in to our ideas, the global goals that were included in our idea are as shown;

Global GoalExplanation
GG3 Good health and WellbeingThis centre would benefit wellbeing and health through allowing more opportunity for people to become active, which helps health and wellbeing.
GG6 Clean Water and Sanitation  Our grey water system helps conserve water as well as not letting lots of waste water go to the sewerage.
GG7 Affordable and clean energy Our idea uses renewable energy to power it, such as solar and geothermal energy. The centre also produces some energy, for example the kinetic energy track.

Capabilities

During this project we developed many capabilities.

During the planning weeks: I think we collaborated well considering Teagan and I were away for a large part of the project. We managed to keep in touch and work on small parts of the project where and when we could.

During the Showcase: We all spoke pretty evenly and got the parts which we researched across. No one really took over the presentation and we spoke natural throughout the showcase.

Conclusion

This was a great opportunity for us to develop our collaboration and working with people as well as expanding our thinking to create big, innovative ideas that could possibly be used in the real world.
