The main capability that I developed is being inquisitive and I learnt this capability through an electrical work experience course. Through this course there was a lot of little things that I did and but to complete every single task to the best of my ability and actually understand what I was doing I had to be inquisitive. To be more specific every time we did something different I would ask why and how it works because in future I would like to become an electrician. Some things we did were replace power points, checking power points and installing a bathroom heat lamp. I had to be inquisitive throughout this course because I was there to learn but the supervisor was not going to spoon feed me the information, so to actually understand what we were doing and how it works I had to ask lots of questions.

By being inquisitive through this course I learnt many new things involving the things listed above. When installing power points, I learnt that the bottom slot is for the earth wire (green) the top left-hand slot is for the neutral wire (black) and that the top right-hand side was for the positive wire (red). I was inquisitive throughout this whole course and even though we didn’t do anything with light switches I asked about it and learnt that it works the same as power points. For checking power points to see if the circuit is correct, we used a multi-meter and I only learnt this because I was inquisitive throughout the day. In one of the power points, the neutral and positive wires were switched around. Also, to install the bathroom heat lamp I learnt that the way lights are wired is the same as light switches and power points but for the fan, I learnt by being inquisitive that you had to short out the Earth wire in something called a connector and the positive and neutral wires were what made the fan work. Once everything had been wired, we had to put all the wires in a J-box so it wasn’t messy and the wires were easy to find if something went wrong. By being inquisitive throughout the day I improved and grew my capability of being inquisitive.

Overall on this day I improved lots of my capabilities and learnt lots of new skills. This will all be very helpful in the future when I start my apprenticeship and I plan to put them into action whenever I can.
