Project Utopia Reflection

What really was project utopia?

Project Utopia for us was how we could reshape Fremantle. Before we knew about the project we did lots of livable cities research and it took a very long time to get the project complete.Fremantle is going to move to kwinana

Summary

Dot Points-What makes a city livable?

We did this in arount term 1 when we were thinking about livable cities and what makes it livable. We were talking about good hospitals, clean water and air, nice infrastructure and many other ideas to create a livable community. Although this was just a little bit of planning that we did, it gave us and understanding of what a livable city is.

This was my dot points

Empathising with others to what livable factors they would live in

During this stage, we were given scenarios about a group of people moving into a new place and we had to describe what type of place will they move into. For example, the first scenario was “A family with school aged children” and I wrote

“Some of the liveability a family would want to live in is when it houses are affordable to suit a family. Good school When you have a school near you because you can go to school quicker and go earlier to do extra things like schoolwork and not get in trouble when your late. A place with not much traffic so they can go to many places quicker. When you can get to places quicker it’s very handy For Example, this could happen with a bad traffic place. The family would want to live in a safe neighbourhood so nothing bad would happen to them and there will be a low-crime rate. They probably would want to be close to where their parents work so they could get a good impression instead of always being late or on time.”

We had a few other scenario’s after but this was also good because we got to learn how to empathise better and it would do us good later during the project.

Dubai

This probably wasn’t a big stage but was effective. This one time in humanities Mr Wong showed us a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCKz8ykyI2E) about Dubai and to be honest it really shocked me! They had such good building designs based on their environment. They have advanced technology that adapts onto the type of weather they live in. They use lots of solar panels for the houses because they live in an extremely hot environment. They have community gardens in the shade to protect them from the sun and they use so much sustainability related appliances. The ideas that Dubai later influenced me throughout the project as well.

The Giver

Just this one book played a big part of our understanding in Project Utopia as it starred a broken community. You may be thinking, what’s so good about a broken community but it gave us an understanding of how a broken community is and what we shouldn’t do. The story is based on a community and introduces us to a boy called Jonas, right now he seems ordinary and all that but he lives in a place called the “Perfect and Flawless” Community which we could call “The Giver Community.” The Giver Community seems all fine and normal until you understand the rules in there, there are some strange rules and laws that the citizens have to follow for example “No colour and music is allowed” can you see a world without colour and music? It would make it more of a dull and dark place to be but not just that, another rule is that no door is allowed to be locked in the society. That’s very freaky and not understandable because this can invade others privacy. Back to the story, during the events of a ceremony, called the Ceremony of 12 (it celebrates your 12th birthday with an elder assigning your future job) during the ceremony, Jonas’s is given the role “The Receiver of Memory.” Being the Reciever of Memory, Jonas is trained by The Giver. The Giver used to be A Reciever of Memory but now he trains them and is concidered an elder. The Giver has the ability to share memories from the past and put it into people’s heads because he used to be a Reciever of memory and Jonas needs to pass down the memories. During the training Jonas has to endure some rough memories like from wars and things like that. And because of that he can understand the planet more and understand that the community has many problems and is in fact not perfect. And to sum up the ending Jonas ends up sharing the memories to everyone in The Giver Community to help them change their perspective of the way they are living currently. The real thing that gave us the right understanding about what a livable city looks like was what it shouldn’t look like. This was pretty helpful during Project Utopia because whenever we had a problem about livability we could look at The Giver as a bad demonstration.

How to measure objective factors.

For this stage we had to do find objective factors of things in our neighbourhood. We had to measure objective factors using the graph above. We had to tick of what level our neighbourhood’s state was. If you didn’t know what objective factors were, they are things that we can count for example, how many trees are in the neighbour hood. This is important because the more positive objective factors there are the better it is. This would help us understand even more with what makes a good livable city.

How to measure subjective factors

This is a picture of what we had to do for this task. We had to understand what subjective factors are and come up with questions that will make people think about subjective factors in their local area. This is very good because subjective factors are things based on personal emotion and likes, if you make a city where there are lots of unique things that people like then it would be pretty good for this project.

Map Surveys

For this we had to use google maps and had to map out our local area with the ruler function on it to create a circle where we would map out the important infrastructure in our area. This would make us understand what good infrastructure is and where to place them well.

Future of Fremantle report

We were set into groups for this task and we were meant to write a report about initiatives in helping Fremantle become a better place for people to live in. Like better housing, more sustainability, electric scooters and much more. We did lots of planning and looking at lots of solutions and that helps our understanding of Fremantle even more. We also made vision boards to show to our grandparents on grandparents day.

Planning what we should have in a livable city

Once again, we were put into different groups to plan more on infrastructure and things.

How can we build on what’s special in Fremantle?      Low buildings Museums Markets Keeping heritage of the Fremantle port through statues of cranes and boxes Restaurant that specialises in seafood Fremantle Dockers festivals Nature walk that educates people about Fremantle’s past  -Museum on the Fremantle Port -Commemorate Aboriginal Culture -Invite local businesses to sell their products – retailers -Rebuild a part of the space like Fremantle’s historical buildings -Tours of the new space -Bands performing -Memorials of Aboriginal dreamtime stories -Keep the low line of buildings –  Cultural Street Art -The style of Fremantle represented via buildings, views etcLow buildings Have tours around the port talking about its heritage about the heritage of Fremantle Signs at green spaces about the Aboriginal culture (like at the welcome wall) Keep all of the old buildings, and recreate the old buildings (perhaps use the same materials as the old buildings) Shrine of old movies Cultural art or street art Fake old vintage advertisements for the Fremantle Prison and Roundhouse 70s music festivals because musicians went into Fremantle in the 70s. Create clones of old people to talk about what they did CLONE WARSKeeping the historical buildings Making tourist sites with information about the past Museums Prison tour No skyscrapers Keeping the beaches Markets Old styled things…We can start a business that offers tours to tourists around the heritage areas. Most of the world’s population would not know the history of the Fremantle Port, it would be a good idea to share the history to tourists.  We could make one of the cranes stay and put lights on it because it is a memory to the port people.Snorkelling because of the beautiful reefs and beaches there (rehabilitate the habitat for fish and underwater sea life so that it will be a fun tourist attraction) There could be a monument dedicated to the rainbow serpent story Tours to show places of cultural importance. People could pay the tour guides for their services. They could perhaps take people to places like the Fremantle prison, or the maritime museum etc. Pick up trash Clean pollution No very tall buildings(apartments) as Freo is a low lying area. Wind radars Fremantle Dockers dedication😀👍✔🎁✌Create a Museum based on the boats and crates from when they were there There could be story boats, and people that talk about past aboriginal  stories that have been passed on to us. Historical Memorials Preserve the list of names in front of the maritime museum   Increase the amount of available markets Increase the amount of job applications
Who will live there and what kind of housing should there be?      Low-lying houses and houses that attract university students and also scientists    All ages No high buildings Wealthy and poor people (mainly poor) – cheap-ish Houses for the homeless Orphanages Apartments Retirement homes Children Hotels Motels-Middle aged people will likely live in Fremantle so there will likely be one story houses, which allow private but good working spaces. -a large range of different style housesF -there should be some older people homes -houses of all ranges (lower and higher classes) -Orphanages for children under 18 -Homeless shelters for the unfortunate -Low rise homes -Apartments for tourists or people who are visiting the port for a holiday  I believe that there is a very nice view towards the ocean in Fremantle port. I think that we could have slightly more expensive houses there because people would be paying for the water-view We could have slightly smaller houses towards the middle of the of the lot, since we could have slightly less pricey houses there for people who live on their own or are doing schooling in the area We could have a section of pre-made houses, and then we could have a section where people can custom make their houses. We can custom make the houses that are a bit smaller and don’t have the view, and then we could have plots of land where people could make their own houses, they can also customize the rooms they have as some people might need more bedrooms then others  Sustainable housing Housing like Dubai sustainable city Old housing Affordable housing Apartments Tourists Not very tall housing Old people (Mr Wong) People who have retired New family’s starting up People in university Small buildings Houses with lots of plants BushlandThere should be a mix of modern houses and Victorian houses to attract young people and older people as the  majority of the older generation do not like modern houses and will prefer a house that will bring back memories of their childhood. There should be lower buildings to support the aesthetic of Fremantle     we should have more older house because the port is old and they should always remember it like that.People  If They work there  Migrants boomers Housing Not apartments as Fremantle is a low lying area. Not to big houses as There are not many big families in Fremantle Sustainable housesSmall housing that is not too big because big houses do not fit into what Fremantle Port is. Should have a variety of different houses that fit in the idea of Fremantle Houses Migrants sustainable
How will people travel from “A” to “B”?      Tram line System for bikes Walking trails  trams Electric cars Electric transport Use solar panels to fuel cars Charging centers for electric cars and in houses around Fremantle E-scooters Hoverboards Mopeds Taxis Rental cars Motorbikes  Railways Helicopters? Ferries Jet skis canoes Electric car charging stations Putting in EV hire stations Underground bike paths Extend the Fremantle CAT bus system Ferries A tube that sucks you into it then shoots you out at your destination and you land into a pit of really soft bean bags on top of a trampoline so you bounce as well         Trams around the port Flat electric roller coaster around the place, and stop off at stations We could have a seats and pedals and it’s on a rail and you pedal around the city like the adventure world ride We could have ride share services, as those should be very cheap to set up, and would get a lot of money, and there is a lot of surcharge for ride shares. We could have bike tours, or walking tours, as those can both tell you about the place and it can also get you around the place.Water taxis Bus Taxi Car Scooter Bike Train Taxi Bike Horses Planes Boats Hot air balloons Ferris Truck Electric scooters Sus white van truckWe will have some e-bikes and have lots of charging place 30min away form each other and e-scooters so people don’t have to use there cars We could have trams that just go around the city so they don’t have to pay for fuel and busses as wellFerries Electric scooters/scooters Electric bikes/bikes Footpaths(people walk) Trams Electric buses Cars Boogieboards Surf Wind surf Dingy Row Wheelie couches Hoverboards Taxis Truck Canoe  E-scooters Bike rentals E-cars ferries hoverboard – can be rented bikes
How can we pay respect to the site’s cultural heritage?      Create a sign acknowledging the traditional owners Celebrate aboriginal events   Build an Aboriginal + Torres Strait Island Flag Build a statue dedicated to The traditional Owners Have talks about the heritage in nature parks Have classes where they talk about native plants Have like ‘welcome walls’ in nature parks which talk about the sites heritage We could have tours around the place where people can visit the historical sites in FremantleKeeping the sites old buildings Having tours about all the history of Fremantle Having signs about the history of Fremantle Keeping some of the older building, that were already there. Having fun kids activity’s that teach kids about the Fremantle heritageWe should keep all the site that have been a specials thing to the port  An idea for this would be for us to sell small model building packages where the model is a special part of Fremantle such as parts of the port, works of art like the rainbow containers, or special heritage sites like the jetty where aboriginals were taken to an island to be imprisoned. This would teach kids about Fremantles’ history and cultural heritage. There could be many ecotourists that take you on tours who will also tell the tourists about all the stories which have been passed on to us. Some of them also tell us of how some of Fremantle port was. So the stories are able to tell everyone about the history of Fremantle Port. There could be museums Some galleries which have painted images, or just pictures of what it was like in the olden days.

This was our entire classes (7Z) plan within our small groups of 4-5

As you can see here, there are many ideas in this table that our class has thought of. They range from many buildings to new appliances for the public to use.

Co-Spaces-Job Opportunities and Infrastructure

We were assigned into even new groups. My group focused on Job Opportunities and Infrastructure. We planned out what type of infrastructure should be around our city and planned what type of buisnesses should be there. We didn’t just do planning because what would we do with it? We were given a part of Fremantle to remake the style and infrastructure there. We then used Co-Spaces (a 3D software) to make our vision of that part of Fremantle.

This was our cospaces on the top view

Physical Model

We were then given another task, recreate your cospaces in model. So practically it was the same thing as the cospaces just looking different (sorry, didn’t have the picture and can’t find it.)

Final Speech and Presentation

For our final task we were meant to present in our groups out cospaces and/or our physical model. We also were meant to explain the importance of infrastructure and jobs and opportunities.

Here was our presentaion

There is nothing around you, just, plain, boring space. What if you were to add infrastructure around you? A whole new world would open. It would become the world we know. We could paint the world, bringing it to life. That is what opportunity infrastructure gives us. I’m Havish, I’m Clarissa, I’m Sam and I’m Aditya and today, we’ll be exploring the idea of infrastructure in Fremantle, and how infrastructure builds communities.

If you don’t know already, the Fremantle Port is enormous! It’s the fourth largest container port in Australia and has a land area of 1.3 square kilometres! With regards to mobility, we’ve created several private transportation methods. We have scattered EV (electric vehicle) stations to encourage a more sustainable way to get around the region. To increase walkability and encourage physical exercise, we have created footpaths and bike lanes. These ways of transportation improve the liveability in the area by increasing sustainability and reducing the amount of fossil fumes in the environment. We have also created parks and green spaces around our industrial area to create a contrast in environments. Additionally, we have devoted a segment of the land for commercial and entertainment purposes. There will be a shopping mall, entertainment district and a group of restaurants built around the port. This will help serve the locals and also attract many tourists. *Havish goes on*.

You wake up in your bedroom. What do you see? Perhaps the bed you’re sleeping on, a simple desk, a computer, a bookshelf, or maybe that secret stash of stuff you hide under your bed. Where do all these come from? Yes, from a variety of different businesses.  We will invite various local businesses and tourist businesses, using advertisements, offering low rent for a period of time and tax credits. There are many different examples of jobs and businesses, such as individual retailers, restaurants and cafes, galleries, indoor rock climbing, shopping mall, virtual reality gaming and more. The unemployment rate in the City of Fremantle was 5.2% in the March 2022 quarter.  The establishment of businesses in the port will provide many job opportunities for local residents. Additionally, as these selected enterprises offer a variety of goods and services that cater to people of all ages, we envision that this will lead to the formation of a diverse and vibrant residential community in the port   .*Aditya goes on*

Furthermore, we have created recreational places for the public to enjoy. Shown here (uses co-spaces and model to explain), we have also included a large sporting centre, a leisure centre, virtual reality, indoor rock climbing, green spaces or parks, a library, and an amphitheatre. As commonly found in local suburbs, many recreational centres are provided to entertain the public. Sport and recreational participation create strong social connections, makes communities safer, and makes residents overall healthier and happier than in communities where physical activity isn’t promoted. Communities become stronger, healthier, happier, and safer via sport and recreation. These places will be open to everyone.  We have also provided a large hotel and residential spaces for accommodation purposes. *Sam talks*.

We live in a world where things are constantly evolving. *Pause* Nowadays things are different, and we have new appliances which help us do daily things. Right now, Fremantle relies on more non-renewable energy causing many problems but with the use of more sustainable appliances we can reshape the use of energy in Fremantle.

Solar panels are an excellent investment to harness clean, renewable energy. The use of solar energy reduces the dependence on fossil fuels like coal for electricity generation and reduces greenhouse emissions. All houses, apartments, and hotels are strongly encouraged to be built with solar panels to help limit the amount of money residents and businesses spend on energy. As an incentive for installing solar panels, we will offer subsidies. Our group has specifically placed the houses near infrastructure to create a more homely and convenient community. *Shows physical model*

As you can see, there are lots of important infrastructure near the houses such as the plaza, shopping mall, a train station, cinema, and community garden. These houses range in different sizes, as the demographics show a range of ages live there, with the median age of 41. For the hotels we also have strategically placed them near the water for the scenic views. We have also created a retirement village, which will be open to the elderly in Fremantle. Fremantle’s housing and sustainability needs to have a reboot, the new generation has come so let us thrive within it.

If you’re anything like me, I used to have accidents all the time, and to be honest, I still do. Last camp, I needed 7 stitches after a surfing incident! But, from each situation I was specially cared for by essential services and healthcare. Essential services are key to a functioning community. Several of these include child care centres, supermarkets, schools and emergency workers. This will ensure the safety and reliability of the new community. Healthcare services include specialist, GPs and dental practices, pharmacies and a hospital. This will ensure the health and wellbeing of the public.

The goals for the space connects with the Global Goals, a list of 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. These include Goal 3 (Good health and wellbeing), Goal 7 (affordable and clean energy), Goal 8 (decent work and economic growth) and goal 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure).

This strategy of creating a space involving these different ideas is similar to Port Coogee. As a port which has the history of shipping cattle, it now has been transformed into a mainly residential space, with access to essential services, recreation and commercial services. This is similar to what we plan to bring to Fremantle port.

Infrastructure is key for a community to grow and thrive. Our goal is to create an environment that caters to people of all ages and in doing so, we will be able to create a strong and diverse community. The facilities that help to attract tourists will also improve the prosperity of the area. With our plan, the Fremantle port can be transformed into a dynamic and vibrant community, one that is very attractive to live and work in. Based off personal experience, infrastructure builds communities. If we inspect local suburbs, infrastructure allows us to connect with one another, and creates a feeling of belonging.  Infrastructure is more than just bricks and mortar, it is the backbone of our communities.

This concluded Project Utopia with presenting not just to the class but to parents as well.

Conclusion

This was a pretty good experience understanding what makes a good city, designing them and being innovative. The whole process took around 3 terms and it was pretty good all together. I hope that the next year 7’s can also enjoy this project. To sum it all up I had a good time doing this project and I hope I could do this in the Future.
