Greywater Recycling

What is Greywater Recycling?

Greywater is water waste from non-toilet plumbing systems. After we finish our shower, we can recycle the greywater to water our plants. However, it’s not just plants that we can use greywater for, we can also use greywater for flushing our toilets and in our washing machines.

How does Greywater Recycling work for gardens?

After we finish our showers and wash our hands, the greywater recycling system will take the greywater and bring it through a biofilter. The biofilter isn’t necessary, but it is what makes the water better for gardens. There is another filter called the Sand/Gravel filter and after the water passes through, the water goes into a storage tank. There is an overflow pipe as well, just in case there is a lot of water. The water will stay in there until ready to come up to water our gardens. If we are using greywater to flush our toilets and in our washing machine, the water will go into a greywater recycling system and get treated correctly.

Why are greywater systems good?

Greywater systems are good because it does not require any freshwater. Saving on freshwater will drastically reduce people’s water bills. It will also stop wastewater from entering the sewers making our sewage unclean and contaminated.

How can I incorporate this into Project Utopia?

I think greywater recycling can be incorporated into Project Utopia by using it in households, sporting complexes and small buildings. We shouldn’t put greywater recycling systems into every single building. Households can benefit greatly by using greywater recycling because they can use water from the non-toilet plumbing systems to water their plants which will allow them to have a garden. At sporting complexes, people have showers after sport which means that there will be a lot of non-toilet waste which can go to water the grass and plants. In a community, greywater recycling will be very efficient because it means that water will not have to enter sewage and people will save a lot of money on their water bills.
