Camp Kalbarri

This year for year 9 OLP we got the chance to go to Kalbarri. This camp was both mentally and physically challenging but with a bit of teamwork and leadership, it made my experience very smooth and fun. Using the school capabilities help our group dramatically and allowed us to step up as leaders and work effectively together.

In order for our group to function and stay on task, teamwork, and leadership were key factors in our day. At the start of camp, we got given roles that we had for the day. These roles were: The water and hygiene, foodies, leaders and navigation, and camp crafters. These jobs helped have a structure to our group. One way that these jobs helped benefit our group was when one group didn’t have much to do with their jobs, we helped other groups, which I was always more than happy to do. Having collaboration in these moments was essential for everyone and allowed everyone’s jobs to go quicker.

I found that in our group there were many natural leaders who helped our group run. Good leaders don’t tell you what to do, they show you and I felt that I was one of those people. In order to be a leader we had to use many capabilities. Problem solving and organisation we vital in leading our group. For example, at night we always planned for the next day and the students were the ones who had to decide when we were going to wake up and when we were leaving and everything in between. Me being a person who likes to be organised, I always stepped forward to problem solve and come up with ideas on what should happen. In those moments I chose to lead our group and help them plan our day, which allowed me to problem solve and use effective thinking.

All in all, I feel that this camp was a very good opportunity for me to be a leader and work on my teamwork with a positive attitude. I feel that I worked on a bunch of capabilities and allowed myself to step out of my comfort zone.
