Defence

Shell drill

The shell drill is a structured defensive set-up primarily used on man-on-man defence in which off-ball defenders will support the on-ball defender. The shell drill uses many skills, these include; reading offensive plays to know what position to be in on the defensive, adjusting to plays and being able to react fast if ‘help’ is needed or having a player cutting through the keyway. The positions include:

  1. On-ball defence
  2. In the passing lane/one pass away
  3. 2 passes away
  4. 3 passes away
  5. Help/split line

When the ball is at the top of the 3-point line the person defending them (purple highlighter) is on-ball defence, this defender plays hard man-on-man knowing that the players behind have help defence. The next defenders/players are either in the passing lane or one pass away (yellow highlighter). This means that the offensive team only has to execute one pass before the ball reaches that same off-ball defender’s assignment and then becomes on-ball defence by them. And now the last defenders are 2 passes away from the ball (pink highlighter), these defenders are ‘help’ defenders in this situation. In this play, we have no one for split-line defence and/or 3 passes away, so the 2 passes-away defenders must play their job. (Play 1)

Now, this situation is a bit different to the one above. The ball is now in the left corner, player one is the player doing on-ball defence. Player 2 is one pass away/in the passing lane. By being in the passing lane you may be able to read the pass and intercept it. Player 3 is 2 passes away by being there they can jump over and help if they come through the top of the keyway. Player 4 is 3 passes away and is ready to jump up to the top players in case player 2 or 3 needs to help on defence. And finally, player 5 is split line/help defence, split line is the invisible line that goes straight through the middle of the court. Player 5 is now the last option that will have the help defence.

Defence video

In this video I’m playing help defence but also on my player even though the ball was kicked to my side I stayed in the same place because the other team wasn’t playing 5 out

this table represents in term 3 when we completed our skills sessions. i completed my skill that i wanted to focus on after school through the weeks. My skill was to get stronger on my left hand. I did 5 minutes of hard left handing dribbling then done 50 layups and counted how many i made between weeks 1-2 and and then between 3-4 i done the same thing but faster, then from weeks 5-7 I done the same thing but at game speed for all 50 of them. I slowly progressed and made more layups. In each week i recorded if I completed it or not.

To complete the coaching cert you must have to complete the following modueles;

Strengths and weaknesses

My strengths are my right hand. this is because I can shoot, pass, and dribble strongly with my right hand. another strength was rebounding, not shown on the videos above but during a game, I thrive in getting rebounds. A weakness of mine is my left hand, not being so strong on my left hand is a major weakness because most defenders want to push the opponent’s left so then it’s an easy steal.

scoring

the way to use the score sheet;
  1. write players names from both teams in the tables
  2. as the game plays you cross the numbers of when someone scores and in the blank boxes on the side you write the number of the person who scored
  3. every time someone gets a foul you cross the box off next to their name
  4. throughout the game you fill in the team fouls and at half time and at the end of the game you add the scores underneath the scores
