  • I have chosen to enrol in this elective as it really is an important issue especially in late 2020 to early 2021, many lives have been lost due to floods, massive bushfires, and coronavirus which are all big issues due to human mistakes we have a massive effect on ourselves, environment and all living and non-living things on the planet earth. The UN has set their sights on making the entire world a ‘blissful utopia’ for us as individuals that might seem impossible but as a unit everyone working together to solve the UN’s problems and reducing risks of massive natural disasters and getting even just a little bit closer to that utopia that the UN is giving us the opportunity to have.
  • Who are the United Nations? the UN are a internationalized organisation of around 51 countries that have banded together after 1945 (The end of the second world war) to solve world issues, preserve world peace and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights. On the 1 January 2016 the UN put the 17 sustainable goals into affect which outline what needs to be done by 2030 for our planet and ourselves

  • What is sustainable development? the idea of being able to move forward in safety, stability and economy without harming the environment in a way that can be done for years to come.

  • What are the sustainable development goals(SDG’s)? They are a list of 17 goals the UN would like to have completed by 2030 giving us the chance to help everyone flourish both environmentally and economically these include:
  • No poverty: he SDGs’ main reference to combatting poverty is made in target 1.A: “Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries

  • Zero hunger: the UN has set out to get rid of any form of hunger or malnutrition a suggested method for this is to move away from animal products and have a more sustainable plant based diet including beans and other easy to grows fruits nuts and vegetables

  • Good health and wellbeing:  The UN plans to ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all ages so the UN has provided more efficient funds for health systems, improved sanitation and hygiene and increased access to physicians significant progress has been made of saving millions of lives.  the outbreak of COVID-19 has taught the UN the critical need for preparedness in cases of emergency or otherwise the UN has increased funding towards public services

  • Quality education the SDGS has attempted to allow all young girls and boys access to quality early childhood education they plan to allow all men and women access to quality technical, vocational and tertiary education

  • Gender equality: allow all men and women equal access to jobs  and schools as well as other resources allowing empowering women and allowing everything to be as equal as possible

  • Clean water and sanitation: the UN plans to provide equal access to water for the entire world, get rid of practices like open defecation and other extremely unhygienic practices they want to do this by getting richer countries with more water to be as water efficient as possible so there is extra for poorer countries, protect natural water related ecosystems like rivers, lakes and wetlands

  • Affordable and clean energy: the UN wants to ensure clean and renewable energy for cooking and housing they plant to double the energy efficiency of  machinery, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology and reduce fossil fuels

  • climate action: the  UN wants to decrease unpredictability in the weather and stop the rapid increase of water levels and keep large natural disasters such as giant bush fires, floods and large storms. This process has actually been pushed along by covid as gas emissions has drastically decreased due to the flight bans

  • Life below water: the worlds oceans their temperature, chemistry currents and  life have gone of the rails with global warming such as coral bleaching and increased marine death since the salt levels and heat levels increased as well as lots of microplastics in the ocean

  • Life on land: The UN wants to put more land to use and take care of the environment as it is the place everything on earth lives even sea life is directly affected by land creature and the same goes the other way around. They want to stop hunting of most if not all animals and currently we are losing 13 million hectares of forest and bushland which forces animals out of their habitats and into new areas which they can die in.

  • Why are these goals important? Because if we keep at the current downhill rate with the environment all plant and animal life will die and that means we don’t have any food which will mean economic collapse and then everything is chaos so if we can stop that from happening now that means it wont be as hard when the ball starts rolling
  • Outline any progress on the SDG’s. To be completely honest considering it has been 5-6 years not much has happened poverty was down and things were going well and then COVID hit and all progress that had been made was promptly reversed except for the outlier of the climate action which was boosted by COVID-19 due to the flight ban, and less people being on buses and travelling which bwas a big cause of carbon emission.
  • What goals do you believe have relevance to All Saints’ College and its community All of them but especially climate action because in all saints we have plenty of money and knowledge about the economy so our biggest priority is to save the environment
