Health social media reflection

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been filling out little booklets all about social media. At the beginning of the unit, I had an active Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Discord and Xbox account.

Some keys things I learned after this unit are.

Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and be able to share feelings with someone. In our unit, we saw empathy where an animated bear showed empathy by comforting another animal in tears. They were acting as if they were humans and giving them human problems such as children getting bad marks at school. Instead of the bear saying “well at least your other son is a straight-A student”. Rather say something along the lines of “I’m so happy you’ve told me this”. I have shown empathy to someone in the past were after a basketball game he was a bit down after missing the game-winning shot. I comforted him and told him that it’s OK that he was down and that I have been there before.

Decision making

In our unit there was a time were a group of kids watched as social media influencer jumped off a high bridge. They wanted to try it out as they thought it was cool, but they noticed how high up they were from the ground. They tested out how high the jump was with a watermelon. They saw that the watermelon got destroyed and knew that if they did it they would end up like the watermelon. I have seen something before as sometimes trends on the internet occur and people want to do it, but they only later realize how dangerous it is.

I learned from the unit that if you have nothing nice to say online don’t say it. Seeing the rude comments Fatima said wasn’t nice. We also saw how in real life a girl in New South Wales killed herself after being bullied. I have said some rude things on the internet, but mainly to my friends as an inside joke between us, but I now learned that other people who see it can be offended.

I would like to change how much time I spend on social media, as I do spend quite a lot of time on it instead of doing something productive.
