In 2023 I had the privilege of being a part of Murdoch Peer Support. This was made up of a group of Year 11’s who went through a selection process at the end of 2022. We played educational games with the teachers who would be managing the peer support group and then had the opportunity to create and instruct our own game in order to be assessed on our skills of leading a group, having a creative game and having good reflective questions which helped those who played the game to learn the lesson that the game was based on.

For Term 1 in 2023 we then met the Year 8’s in Murdoch who we would be playing the games with. As a peer support group we met weekly and planned out the activities we would play and what lesson these games would be teaching.

From this experience I not only improved my leadership and communication skills as I had to learn how to communicate with the younger students and how to then lead them through the games but it also gave the the invaluable opportunity to connect with the younger Murdoch students and create bonds with them. This will then help them to transition into vertical Tutor Groups next year as they will be able to know a few Year 12’s. Getting to know these younger students then allows me to be able to ask them for the honest opinions when it comes to different activities regarding Murdoch when being a part of the House Council or potentially the House Captain.
