Project Utopia 2021

In Term 3 the whole Cohort of Year 7 had to redesign the Fremantle Port as it is planned on being moved in the future to Kwinana. This project would plan on creating a sense of belonging as well as a sense of community. We had to choose a plot of land in a limited range of land and decide what we’ll be adding to the area. We did this in a group of four people. My group consisted of Tejas Morisetty, Chloe Maxwell, Maya Balagopal and myself. Before deciding what to add and where to implement it, we went on an excursion to the Fremantle Port. Everyone was split into different groups and visited different sections and areas of the Port. We took photos of our sightings and explored the area. My group agreed on using the Northern part of the Port to use as a sustainable residential area in which uses some of the UN Global Goals. The global goals consist of 11 and 9. Goal number 11 is “Sustainable Cities and Communities” and Goal Number 9 is “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”. You can find more about the UN Global Goals below. We implemented these goals by using unique styles of infrastructure (Mediterranean Style) which we researched throughout the term. We referred back to this research throughout the whole project.

Liveability and Sustainability

To make this residential area generally more likeable. We had to include some of the factors of liveability. Liveability is a geographical concept that can alter the likeability of an area based on the resident’s surroundings as well as what the suburb is like. Liveability can be increased by several factors. These factors can include the following: Infrastructure, Climate, safety and Stability, and environmental quality, etc. One of the factors which we included was infrastructure, we added this factor by ensuring that the road and buildings would be secure when the houses were complete. Overall, these factors should make the area a more likeable and liveable place.

Another way we could improve liveability was by making this area sustainable. We achieved this by using a
sustainable method of transport which is by using bikes. There is an underground car park at the tip of the Port which you can park your car in and ride off to your house. We also used sustainability by using a renewable energy source to power the area. These energy sources include geothermic energy and solar energy. We will also use a list of sustainable materials to use when the houses will be built. I learnt from liveability and sustainability that these are crucial to any area if it is wanted to be a likeable place. This will support the progress of the UN Global Goals and will provide us with a more sustainable future.

UN Global Goals

In this project, it was crucial to include some of the UN Global Goals to make a good community and to help the Earth to be more sustainable. The UN Global Goals are a series of big tasks to help make the world and our society better. These goals are planned to be completed by 2030. In our residential area, we decided to include the global goals, eleven and nine. Goal number nine is Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and Goal number eleven is Sustainable Cities and Communities. Goal number nine means to have good roadworks and nice housing and buildings. Goal number 11 meaning to use sustainable methods of transport, energy and to create an eco-friendly society in general. We implemented these UN Global Goals by using a sustainable method of transport (bikes) as well as using a sustainable method of renewable energy. We used the UN Global Goal number 9 by using different styles of architecture for the housing and making sure that the bike paths are nice, etc. I learnt from the UN Global Goals that they are important to make the world generally a better place for everyone. These Global Goals will hopefully create a functioning society in the area which my group has designed.

Vision Board

To present all our work, we had to create a vision board. A vision board was a gallery of images that would be used to represent our group project which had no words, in this case, was Project Utopia. We would present this board your groups did their speeches. A draft of our vision board can be found below.

We had to categorise these pictures into different subtopics, including Sustainability, Audience and Culture, Rationale, Inspiration, Transportation, Challenges and Questions and Native Plants. We used these pictures to represent our styles of housing, methods of sustainability and transport, Fremantle’s culture, and houses which we used to support us when designing this area.

The ASC Capabilites

When redesigning my groups’ area of the Port, I used capabilities shown in the wheel above, Organisation, Self-aware, problem-solving, and effective communication. I used these traits by being aware of what could happen if we added different things in the community. For instance, we planned on building an underground car park to store the cars, as we wanted to have an easy and sustainable method of transport. We decided on using bikes as the method of transport. But I had to be aware of what could interfere with this design and think from somebody who is living in the area as a Point of View. I used problem-solving capability by thinking of new and sustainable ways to do a certain act. For example, we needed a place to park the cars, but we wouldn’t have much room for other buildings and housing. So, I had the idea of building an underground car park to preserve space. My group was organised not to lose any of our work, and we all learnt our speeches quite quickly. Finally, my group used the capability, effective communication by collaborating as well as discussing what we can add and where to add it. The ASC Capabilities are crucial as they can help you out anytime in your life. They can be used as a helpful guide to steer your life in the correct direction.

ORAL Presentation
Fremantle Port ORAL Presentation

With our same groups from Project Utopia, we had to create a speech about our design of the Port. This video can be found above. We had to create a four-minute-long speech about our Fremantle Port Redesign. We would then have to present this speech to the parents and other guests who came along to the presentation showcase.

Altogether from these experiences combined, I learnt a lot. I learnt and ‘flearnt’ (Failed and learnt) from the ORAL presentations to not be nervous when presenting. As well as this but I also learnt that you should learn your speech well as it helps you when you’re presenting. I also learnt to follow the ASC Capabilities as it can help you out greatly. Overall, I flearnt a lot in this project and I learnt a lot in general.
