Organization

In my experience, I have consistently adhered to deadlines for practical tasks, such as printing and hands-on projects. However, when it comes to the more complex case study-type pages in my visual diary, I’ve often found it necessary to request extensions. These analytical and research-intensive components demand a deeper level of engagement and time commitment to ensure comprehensive and high-quality work, which can sometimes require extra time.

Inspiration

At the outset of my printing project, I embarked on a smaller, more personal endeavor that set the stage for my creative journey. Inspired by a piece of lino bearing a beautifully detailed dog portrait, I felt an instant connection with the intricate artistry it presented. This discovery led me to pay homage to my beloved pet dog from home, Cocoa, by etching a portrait of him. Inspired from the pre-carved lino’s exquisite dog image, I embarked on this heartfelt tribute, infusing my own artistic interpretation into the piece. This initial project not only allowed me to honor Cocoa but also served as a valuable training ground for developing my etching skills.

Mono Print

For my final lino print project, I drew inspiration from an intriguing piece of art displayed on one of the outer tables in the art room. This artwork featured a mesmerizing honeycomb pattern covered in a delicate layer of wax, and it immediately captivated my imagination. I decided to incorporate this unique texture and design into my print. As I worked on my project, I noticed that the right side of my composition was rather blank and lacked the vibrancy I desired. After some online searching, I stumbled upon an image of Winnie the Pooh, a beloved childhood character. Intrigued by the idea, I decided to take inspiration from him to fill the empty space, adding a touch of nostalgia and charm to my print. Before delving into this final composition, I had also experimented with a detailed image of a rosebush to test the limits of detail achievable in a lino print, and I was pleasantly surprised by the level of intricacy that emerged in the final result.

Problems

Printing in lino was the most satisfying and easiest printing technique I encountered. Unlike the harder plastic we had used before, lino offered a more user-friendly experience for carving intricate designs. I discovered that straight lines in lino didn’t have the same visual appeal as curved or intricate lines. The process of carving into the lino felt smooth and allowed for greater creativity in my artwork. It was truly a rewarding experience to see my designs come to life on paper through the lino printing process.

Success

I achieved success in printmaking by skillfully inking the print with just the right amount of ink, ensuring vivid and detailed results. My precise carving techniques allowed for accurate reproduction of my original design on the lino block. Additionally, I successfully transferred intricate images and artwork onto the lino using ink sheets, further enhancing the quality of my prints. With my dedication to designing unique and original print compositions, I have honed my craft to create captivating and distinctive works of art.
