Sleek Geeks Science Video Project

For the past two terms in science, we have been creating videos to submit for the Australian Museum’s Sleek Geek Eureka Prize. The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Change’. The conditions we had to follow were that the videos could be no longer than 2 minutes long, and they had to communicate a scientific concept in a way that was entertaining and “painlessly increased people’s scientific knowledge”. My group consisted of Jessica, Beth, Ebony, Caitie and I. Our video idea focuses on physical and chemical changes, and we decided to explain this by filming a cooking show. In the video, we make ice cream and cinnamon scrolls to display how those changes occur in our everyday lives.

Here is the link to our final submission: https://allsaintswaedu-my.sharepoint.com/personal/l26lockb_allsaints_wa_edu_au/_layouts/15/onedrive.aspx?id=%2Fpersonal%2Fl26lockb%5Fallsaints%5Fwa%5Fedu%5Fau%2FDocuments%2FASC%202022%2Fscience%2Fsleek%20geeks%2FSleek%20Geeks%20entry%2Emp4&parent=%2Fpersonal%2Fl26lockb%5Fallsaints%5Fwa%5Fedu%5Fau%2FDocuments%2FASC%202022%2Fscience%2Fsleek%20geeks&wdLOR=c7176D371%2D2360%2D414E%2DA175%2D3BEEDC4164C8&ct=1658580295634&or=Outlook%2DBody&cid=FEA853ED%2DCA17%2D4F06%2DB1D7%2DDA52C4F3A1A5&ga=1

Reflection

My group organised ourselves well by distributing the workload evenly and assigning specific roles based on our strengths. For example, I wrote the script and acted as one of the characters in the video, whilst Beth helped to film and edit the video. I feel that everyone in my group had an equal contribution to the idea of our project, as we all agreed on the same idea and were able to negotiate and contribute our ideas quite smoothly.

Despite this, we did have a few disagreements and arguments, because some group members felt that they were doing more work than others. We were able to resolve these conflicts quickly by communicating with each other effectively, figuring out who was doing what and distributing the workload based on what everyone could and couldn’t do.

My group managed our time quite well, but towards the end of the project we did feel a bit rushed for time. Luckily, we were able to complete the video on time. If I had another opportunity to do this project, the things I would do differently are communicating with my group members a bit more clearly at the beginning of the project so that it doesn’t affect things later down the road.

Overall, this project was a very fun and unique way to learn a science concept and have the opportunity to teach it to others at the same time. We also got to make and eat some very delicious cinnamon scrolls and cookies and cream ice cream as a reward at the end.
