In semester one, by Health class are learning about road safety and the rules when it comes to driving. We went to the BStreetSmart excursion where we were showed a fake car crash scenario, and were spoken to by victims of car crashes. These guest speakers really told us how big the consequences are of being in a car crash and making those wrong previous choices. There were many facts and statistics about crashes and driving that we were told and they definitely put some sense and shock into us listeners. My experience as a student taking part in the RAC BStreetSmart excursion were very enlightening and instructive. This innovative project taught me valuable lessons and given me great perspective on the reality of road safety. It taught us about responsible driving and the repercussions of dangerous behaviours by showing us real-world simulations.

WHAT I LEARNT:

What I learnt from the RAC BStreetSmart excursion was that you shouldn’t take the risk of of getting in the car with someone driving that you know is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You may think that everything will be ok and nothing will happen to YOU, but most of the time, bad things do happen, even fatal things, all because you made one wrong decision. I learnt the stories of 2 guest speakers who had been in car crashes. One was paralyzed and the other has lost his legs, and his friends. The elaboration on their stories really opened my eyes on how the crash had affected both of their lives greatly, their family’s friends and their friends lives. It also opened my eyes on how this could happen to anyone at anytime, even when you aren’t expecting it and thinking that it couldn’t possibly happen to you out of everyone. The highlight of the excursion for me was watching the fake crash scenario. I liked how real it was, and how much effort was put in to make sure that us viewers would understand the dangers and importance of what can happen when driving under the influence of alcohol. I’m happy that i got the opportunity to go on this excursion because it has broadened my knowledge to become a responsible driver.

ONE PIECE OF ADVIDE TO PASS TO YOUNG DRIVERS:
Make the right choices whenever you are driving with others or by yourself, and know all the road rules. These things will keep you safe and alert to things that could potentially happen. Know the consequences of making wrong choices on the road, because if you do then you will take less risks because you don’t want to be unable to do things you love for the rest of your life.

CAMPAIGN POSTER AND PLEDGE

When I become a driver, I pledge to stay alert on the roads and responsible. I will do this by not being distracted by my phone or others phones, as through the things I’ve learnt in class, I know the risks and consequences of getting distracted and taking my eyes off the road even for a couple of seconds. I will never drive with alcohol in my system, as I also know the consequences of this. I will always be alert of pedestrians, other cars and my environment. by looking out for others and assessing either the risks or positive outcomes of choosing to do something when driving will help me to keep myself and others safe.
