Project Utopia

One of our major projects in Year 7, Project Utopia, was to create a perfect society. We were put in groups for this project. We used many different subjects to improve our skills to help us make a perfect society. The subjects were Science, Humanities, English, and Innovat[ED].

This was one of the guests during our project. Her name is Liza Harvey. She helped us make our community better and taught us a bit about what she does.

In Term 2 when we were working from home, we read “The Giver” during our English lessons. The Giver taught me that you can’t have one person choosing everything for you like your job or what you wear, a perfect society lets people have a bit of freedom to choose. Also, in Humanities we learned about the liveability factors, which helped me understand what a perfect society had to have in it to make it perfect and therefore include in our utopia. I researched safety and stability which meant that I could inform my group on what I had found out, so we could put these factors in our community e.g. security cameras.

In our Science lessons, we worked in partners and made a sustainable house. It made me think that I need to make sure that our utopian community is sustainable and will not damage the natural environment. I liked building a sustainable house as my strengths are more creative and making physical things than on the computer. This helped me understand how we could design our house in the utopia project as sustainable as possible. We learned about the Geographical concepts which meant that we could implement these into our community. This helped me and my group as we had a better understanding of the geographical concepts which made our community better.

In our Innovat[ED] lessons, we mainly worked on our building. You could choose to do a physical modal or co space. My group and I chose a physical model as we were not as good on the computer. There were lots of problems that we had to solve like when we didn’t have enough plasticine so we had to mix the colours together but we managed to solve all of our problems with a group effort.

They also got us to implement the UN Global Goals. We would have to tell the teacher about how we have implemented the UN global goals into our community. If the teacher thought we have done it well, they would give us accreditation. In total, we acheived 10 accreditations. The first accreditation, we earned was Life on Land. In Humanities, we also learned a lot on the Constitution of Australia, learning what it was and how you can change it or when it was first made. Our assessment was to make a constitution for our community which would help us run our community. In this, we had to choose if we would like to be a democracy or a different type of government, but we choose democracy as we already know a lot about democracy and we thought it was the best fit.

This project has taught me many things. I have shown my more creative self and expanded my thinking in how our community in the present-day is run and how we can, as people, improve our world. Before this project, I knew little about the UN Global Goals and what we could do to help improve our lifestyle but now I do. I feel I can help others achieve these goals. If I could do this project once more, I would have started doing the building a week or two sooner but overall, I am quite happy with what we have achieved.
