Year 9 Camp Leadership

During year 9 camp, I found that there were many scenarios where teamwork and a display of proactive leadership were needed. Although I demonstrated my ability to work effectively in a team well and guide others when they required assistance many times, there is one occasion that stands out from the others, which is when I took the initiative to offer help to the entirety of my group when descending a steep, unsafe pathway.

The schedule for the year 9 OLP had stated that the group I was in would make the trek down to the gorges on day 3 and stay overnight to depart on day 4. On day 3, my group was ready to follow the pathway into the gorge. Before the walk, I had ensured that everyone had securely strapped their day pack on their back, as to not lose any equipment or for anyone to injure their back from the heavy load. On the walk down to the gorge, we had encountered a remarkably steep drop that became a problem for our group to descend. At this point in time, I had already made it past the drop, but I could see that it wasn’t an easy obstacle to overcome for the rest of my group. Instead of continuing through the path, I was aware of the problem and stayed back at the drop, whilst offering a hand to those who needed it when they went down. Most people accepted my help and used my guidance to navigate their way down the drop safely, whereas others made it down on their own, but they still acknowledged my help. I had made it apparent that I was aware that people needed assistance by presenting my services where needed.

This occasion showed me that I am a valuable asset and leader, and I am able to read situations carefully and apply my knowledge or services to the situation to solve any problems effectively and efficiently.
