2020 Innovat[ED] Documentary Team: Developed Capabilities

For the last two terms, Innovat[ED] has been a time where we solve challenges given to us from Allsaints’ College’s various service partners. For the documentary team that I was lucky to be a part of, we developed a lot of our capabilities, and we learned a lot of skills-about not just Premiere Pro- but also about important values that need to be upheld strongly whilst collaborating in a team. The values I felt I most developed were resilience and effective communication.

Since before COVID-19, we were doing a lot of filming. This was when effective communication was key: we needed to each devise a workflow to create informative videos. We also needed to assign one service partner to each little film-and-edit group. I developed communication skills when figuring out which folders to sort the films into. This was a crucial step, as otherwise Premiere would render the files offline, and our collaborative adobe project would become muddled with the disorganization of our file-sorting.

Resilience came into play when we began the editing stage of the process ,as we used a collaborative adobe project, and this posed a few problems. The project was very laggy, and getting the latest changes from other people sometimes took hours. But not as long as it took to share your own changes. On top of that, the project was having trouble linking media to the file locations meaning that it would render files as offline. We found ways around this after doing a bit of research, and without resilience, we would probably have all quit very early on.

Over all, it was a fantastic experience, and I feel so lucky to have learnt these lessons now, as I know I will use them in the future.
