Year 9 Camp Kalbarri: My Journey through Leadership

Leadership: a skill crucial for being able to thrive in the workplace, be productive in harmony with others, and make the most out of opportunities that come your way. This was a capability, along with collaboration and effective communication, that I learnt many aspects of on camp.

My camp group: We all collaborated with each other to mount our hiking packs on our backs, and check in with each other during our journeys to make sure we were all ok.

Being a group leader on the hike to Four-Ways was a very beneficial experience for tuning my leadership style. I discovered that I blossomed whilst staying at the back and encouraging others to keep moving, and helped people adjust their hiking packs when need be. I relied on my communication skills to yell out to the front-of-line leaders, to confirm that the group is still moving altogether. Additionally, collaboration with my fellow group members allowed us to all get our enormous hiking packs on our backs. We learnt a routine to help lift each other packs each time we had to put them on, to prevent back injuries. Throughout the hiking portion of the camp, capabilities of leadership, collaboration, and effective communication were constantly exercises to get our group where it needed to go.

Four-Ways campsite: I made sure to always keep it clean, and pick up all the food and rubbish to make sure the animals and plants in the area were caused no harm.

Staying back after cooking to clean up the mess my group left behind was an additional time in which I displayed leadership. I knew that leaving pieces of food on the ground could be harmful to flora and fauna around the campsites, so I made sure to thoroughly clean up anytime I saw food or rubbish on the ground. Together, with a few other group members who were also considerate of nature, we collaborated to clean up every piece of food and rubbish. In this situation, my development of capabilities on camp allowed us to be able to use the fantastic campsites whilst staying environmentally friendly, which was import due to the fact that we were staying in campsites amongst many animals sharing the habitat.

Throughout the entirety of the camp, I developed my leadership, communication, and collaboration capabilities. I learned many lessons about my leadership style, and how to operate efficiently and effectively in a team. The experience of camp was very beneficial, and it was an amazing character building experience.
