Fremantle Port design

The beginning

This year we have been working on Project Utopia. The word “Utopia” means an imagined place in which everything is “perfect”. This project involved redesigning the Fremantle port in groups of 4 and displaying our design in the showcase. The current Fremantle Port will be relocated, and this allows us to have many opportunities to imagine the buildings and redesign the area. We were allowed to focus on one aspect of the project. My group focused on transport. We focused on transport because we wanted to limit the number of cars on the road. We did this by creating a tram system and an underwater tunnel.

Liveability

In Project Utopia, one of our tasks was about connecting to different goals and factors that people live in to thrive. These factors are the livability factors and they are climate, infrastructure, environmental quality, safety and stability, access to health care, and education. Our group’s idea was based on the Liveability factor infrastructure because the part of the infrastructure is about transport. We created an underwater tunnel and a tram bridge to cross the water to get to the other side of Fremantle. Our group also made an underwater tunnel to educate and let people have a little exercise. We want to have less carbon footprint released into the atmosphere. Making fewer cars needed to be in the space.

Sustainability

Sustainability is another goal that we used in our project. We did this by doing a few things. For our Tram and the tram stops, we really drew our attention to being sustainable for the environment, using less energy. By doing this our designs will not hurt our environment and it would be unhurtful to others and animals around. We did this by using solar panels to create sustainable energy to power the nearby street lighting, the lights at night, and power the trams. But we are also recycling resources from the current port like glass and containers, so they don’t go to waste!

This is our vision board

The Vision Board

Our vision board covered many concepts like transport, Liveability factors, environment, the heritage of the Port, location, clean energy, global goals, and the underwater tunnel. We had to get many photos showing our ideas and our designs. It was also a way to show our ideas in real life. Some of our group had to catch on to work because of music lessons or not using class time right. But in the end, our vision board came together and it was amazing!

UN Global Goals

The UN global goals are the 17 goals that the world wants to complete by 2030. These goals conclude environmental, livability, Economy, and health goals. The UN Global goals that we focused on in our project were a clean and sustainable city (11), life below water (14), infrastructure (9), and climate action (13). We wanted the Tram system/underwater tunnel to be sustainable but also help the citizens in their everyday life. That why we brought our attention to these goals.

Challenges

On our journey we faced some challenges, this concluded redesigning our idea for the tram. Our first plan was to take a tram with solar panels and vines on top. But after some thinking, we realised they would probably fall off and how would we water them? Then we changed to just solar panels. The panels on top wouldn’t be enough to power the whole thing. We decided to put panels onto the car parks around the area to help power the trams. We also had some questions about the disabled on the showcase. We would add a ramp down to the underwater tunnel and a step onto the trams. At every Tram stop, there would be a person helping out. Here would provide more job opportunities too.

Public speaking skills

Throughout the project, we had many chances to prepare for the showcase. We practiced what we were going to say and what part who was doing. After some repetition of our speeches, it felt too staged. Then, Ms. L talked about how when we are in the showcase to talk as if it is just a conversation. It was hard at first, but I felt like when it got to the showcase it just rolled out of my tongue. I perceived that I explained my part of the project well and was able to express my ideas. I talked in a clean, confident voice and referred to the vision board while I was speaking. I wasn’t repeating myself. I connected with the audience by letting them ask questions and tried my best to answer them.

Showcase

In the showcase, we could show off our ideas and we were able to ask and answer questions. We got some questions about the disability and the location of the underwater tunnel because of the boats that go over the top. We presented really well, and we explained our ideas to many people like Parents, Professors, and many others. In the showcase, it allowed us to be challenged because we would get questions that we didn’t think about and we would have to add them into the next presentation to others, so we wouldn’t get the same question occurring.

Conclusion

In Conclusion, I have learned much from this Project. I have collaborated with my group very well and I enjoyed it very much. We hope that one of our designs or ideas gets into the redesign of the Fremantle Port. It was a great opportunity to work with people that I haven’t worked with before. Overall, the journey was amazing and I am proud of what I and my group accomplished.
