My day at rotto!!

In term 1 of 2021, all the outdoor ed classes embarked on a trip to Rottnest Island to snorkel at the basin. The organization is a key capability I think was needed on this trip as we needed to remember to bring all our gear and food and water. the organization was a big part of this trip for it to work and for everyone to get there on time. effective communication is another key capability that was used on this trip. Making sure our buddies were ok and alerting our teachers if there was a problem was a big thing we used on the journey at Rottnest. Self-awareness was shown a lot. we had to be self-aware of the animals and environment around us to assure our safety.

  • The trip started off nice as we had to wake up early and arrive at the cpa at 7:30, we ended up arriving at Rottnest by fairy at 9:30am, My group was last on rotation to snorkel, I really enjoyed snorkelling at the basin and the water was a comfortable temperature. Before snorkelling, we were asked to be mindful of the coral and reef and show respect to the ocean. We also had to act responsible as a person and portray the college values during our time there.
  • I saw many different species of fish and lots of coral, the seaweed there was quite common and one of the classes even saw a seal.
  • My snorkelling skills were experienced as we got lots of time to practice before in the pool, however I did find myself struggling to keep my goggles clear as they kept getting foggy every 10 seconds, I also struggled to equalize and go down low as my ears hurt. I found swimming pretty easy and didn’t really struggle through the water
  • Me and my buddy Clara worked well together as we were constantly checking up on each other and taking multiple quick selfies under water with the camera.
  • I enjoyed the snorkelling the most throughout the day and swimming with friends and socializing.
  • I give the experience a 9/10 as I was looking forward to it a lot and it was a really fulfilling experience and would love to go again.

Leave no trace applied to us throughout the whole trip we had to ensure that our area and space were clean and not to litter or throw any rubbish in the ocean and bush.
