RAC Road Safety

This year as Year 10’s, we attended the RAC Be Street Smart excursion with multiple other schools to learn about being safe on the road and the risks we take when we drive a vehicle under the influence. We listened to real life stories from guest speakers, watched a live reenactment of a crash and had a chance to look at cars and first response vehicles. Some parts of this day was hard to imagine and look at but was very important for us to learn the risks and damages we are going to take.

What were the biggest things you learned while at the RACbstreetsmart excursion?

The biggest things that I learnt at the RAC Be Street Smart excursion was the reasoning behind why you shouldn’t drink and drive. Many speakers came in and told us their experiences of drinking at driving and how it affected them later in life. I learnt that all of them thought it would never happen to them as it seemed so rare but if it happened to them why can’t it happen to us. I realized how common crashes are but also how they can easily be prevented.

What one piece of advice would you pass on to young drivers above all else and why?

The one piece of advice that a young driver needs to know is that they should never drink before they drive under any circumstance. There are many other options to avoid drink driving including calling an uber or getting a sober friend or parent to pick you. This is crucial for young drivers to know and follow to keep the next generation safe.

Pledge

I pledge that I will never drink and drive and will always stay under the alcohol limit on my license. I will commit to this because even though sometimes it could seem a bit inconvenient it will make a massive difference in protecting the safety of all drivers on the road. I will stick to this commitment by arranging plans before I know im going to drink and always having someone to call to help me. I will always ring someone or get an uber when im under the influence instead of risking my safety for a more convenient ride.
