Snorkelling

In the second term of the Outdoor Ed Muir unit, we focused on snorkelling. Snorkelling is when you go swimming with a snorkel on and look at underwater landmarks and such. For this class, we’ve got to go to Omeo Wreck in North Coogee and Rottnest Island.

Orienteering

In the first term of the Outdoor Ed Muir unit, we focused on orienteering. Orienteering is a competitive sport in which runners have to find their way across an area with the help of a map and compass. We went to 2 different places to orienteer, Jorgenson National Park and Piney Lakes Reserve. We were also going to go to Manning Park but couldn’t because of the weather.

Camp

For the camp, we went to Rottnest Island, formerly known as Wadjemup before it was colonised. On the first day, we sent our bags to Camp Kitchen and walked to Little Parakeet Bay which took about 40-50 minutes for our first day of snorkelling. We had 2 snorkels that day then we went back to the camp and did an amazing race and had burgers or hot dogs for dinner. The next day we did a cleanup and packed up our tents then we had a bit of free time before walking to The Basin, the walk on the 2nd day was a lot shorter than the first day, it was only about a 5-minute walk. When we arrived at The Basin we only had 1 snorkel but had an optional 2nd and in my opinion, the 2nd snorkel at The Basin was the best snorkel of the whole camp.

Leave No Trace

We looked at a lot of stuff at the start of the semester and leave no trace was one of them. Leave no trace means cleaning where you’ve been and leaving it cleaner than you found it so you don’t leave a trace.

Capabilities

A capability used in orienteering is problem-solving because you’re not always going to know where you are and where your objective is. Another capability used in snorkelling is being organised because it could be really cold and you never really know what to expect so be organised and ready for anything. And for camping, a capability that could be used would be collaborative because you have to work well with your group to make set up your tents and stuff.
