Project Utopia is a project we have been working on in Hass, Science, English, and Innovate Ed. The project was to create a perfect society (Utopia) and we had to make sure that it was liveable, sustainable and was good for the world. We either had the choice to make a model or create one on an app called co spaces.

Reflecting on the assignment I have learnt a lot and will discuss further on the following topics.

Jing and I at the presentation night for our Utopia.

ASC Capabilities e.g. Collaboration, Communication, Organise etc.

I worked with Jing Quan. We collaborated really well together, and in the end, produced something great. We had great communication because after school on most days we would go on Teams and chat to each other and in Innovate Ed time we would always start off talking to make sure we knew what we were doing. for that day. So I learnt we made a great team. We were also very organised because as soon as we got to Innovate Ed we had all our equipment ready to go for e.g. if we were going for an accreditation I would have the script ready and on the presentation day we would have all the things we needed ready. So I learnt that we were very organised.

Jing and I coming up with ideas for our connections between Global Goals, sustainability and liveability.

Geographical Concepts

The reason we decided to live on a island is that it would be better for our economy. It would help us get more water because the desalinisation plant can just take the water from the ocean and make it into potable water. The brine left over can help us with not using as much energy. It would also be a nice and calm place to live on. I learnt that it does matter where we live ether it is on an island or land because if we were inland we might not get as much water than we get from an island.

Liveability

Jing and I had to make sure that we had all the 5 liveability factors in our utopia. These being safety and stability, environmental quality, climate, infrastructure and healthcare and education. Without the 5 liveability factors we would not have been able to make the utopia we have made today. It was good to learn the importance of liveability and why we need it to be a good society. Without liveability our utopia would be not very sustainable. We spoke to Paul Garbett Director of Strategic Planning and Projects, City of Fremantle and he discussed interesting ways to design a town which would help the citizens.

Civics and Citizenship – Constitution

I now know the importance of having a Government and a constitution which allows for laws to be made and I learnt that the constitution is an important piece to the utopia because it unites us as a place, it gives us freedom and gives us our rights. Our leaders are voted and when voted they must make the laws, debate national issues and authorise the government to spend public money.

Sustainability

I learnt that sustainability is very important for a Utopia to be even liveable and without sustainability our Utopia would not be very sustainable. The examples of our sustainability are the desalination plant which takes the water from the ocean and converts it into potable water. We also had energy efficient cars that come from the brine left over from the desalination plant. We also had wind farms and hydroelectricity.

UN Global Goals

I found out that global goals area very important towards the Utopia and if we try our hardest and all join the cause we can solve some of the worlds biggest problems like no poverty or no hunger. During the project Utopia process, we had the chances to get accreditation for the global goals. Jing and I managed to get 5 global goals which where clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, no poverty, good health and well being and climate action.

Us getting an accreditation for affordable and clean energy.

Public Speaking Skills

We were asked to present our Utopia and speeches at a parent night. While I was a little nervous at first my presentation was good. To improve next time, I will practice more and try to memorise my speech without having to look at the palm cards as often. I learnt that I don’t have to worry to much about the scary feeling of preforming in public but just think to myself that I can do this because I can.

Model Building / Co Space

Jing and ! decided to do Model building other than Co Space. We chose this because we thought we would be more fun and better to build a model instead of an online one. The reason I found it better is that it was more interactive for people to see and more visual compared to staring at a screen.

Professor Donna Cross from BBI
Chantelle Gilbert from city of Belmont

In conclusion I enjoyed this project and learnt a lot about designing a Utopia and incorporating aspects such as liveability and sustainability. Working with Jing and getting advice from professionals such as Professor Donna Cross from BBI and Chantelle Gilbert from city of Belmont, I believe the project was a success.
