What were the biggest things you learned while at the RAC streetsmart excursion?      I learnt about the ways that can affect drivers and cause accidents to occur in a split second. This could be distractions like passengers, phones and also influences from alcohol and drugs. You must also wear a seatbelt at all times because it may save your life. Speeding is also not allowed, so you must obey all road rules.   There was a demonstration of a car crash where the driver had alcohol levels over the limit. Along with this, one of the passengers started to distract the driver by showing him text messages and leaning over to the front seat. The passenger didn’t  wear a seatbelt either. Another factor was that they were also speeding a bit.   The result of this was the car crashing with a motorcycle. This is because the driver didn’t pay attention to the road because they were distracted and also a bit drunk. The passenger that didn’t have a seatbelt on got flung out of the car and passed away. All of this showed me that lots of small things added together can have fatal consequences. You must make sure you follow all road rules and be a responsible driver and passenger.
What one piece of advice would you pass on to young drivers above all else?   Why?    I would tell young drivers to make the safest and wisest choice. If you make a safe choice, it will be the right choice. For example, if you had the choice to change lanes at a place with fast cars or later, the safer choice would be to change lanes later because it will be the safer choice. This is main piece of advice I will pass to young drivers who are likely to take risks and not make safe choices.
Write down a pledge that you will commit to when you start driving.   Why did you pick these things to commit to?   How will you stick to these commitments?I, Nicole, promise to always drive safely and make the best decisions that will ensure the safety of myself and others. I have chosen to pick these things to commit to because I believe that it is your responsibility to drive safely on the road. I also know that you choices not only impact yourself, but also others. I will stick to these commitments by getting rid of distractions such as mobile phones, alcohol, fatigue, etc. I will also not commit offences such as speeding, and going past the red light.
