ASC Chicken Program – Semester 2

  • This semester my class and I worked together to make a learning experience for the Junior School, that teaches them valuable lessons in an engaging way along improving the chickens wellbeing. We started the semester off by looking at the best ways to improve the chickens life, by brainstorming what we already knew. My group focused on organising daily jobs to keep the chicken coop up to date and clean. We did this by listing all the jobs that needed to be done and creating a roster to track what gets done throughout the week. We hung it up in the chicken coop and it worked for a while, until it became outdated since we had become so accustom the job that it became muscle memory. We then decided to go along a different path by joining groups and creating a project that could be shared throughout the Junior School community.

Our next task was to create a lesson where the student can share their existing knowledge on chickens and learn new things. These classes ran from week 2 to week 5 and had separate sections to focus on different things. The start of the lesson focused on the students existing knowledge, where we did a See, Think, Wonder and then moved onto a brainstorm. After the students had worked on the in-class section of the lesson we walked over to the chicken coop and started the hands-on experience. We decided this lesson would focus on four sections, one on the diet of chickens, the housing, the sustainability portion and finally a hands-on experience. We rotated these groups around giving each kid enough time to enjoy and learn before they moved onto the next part.

The second task was definitely the most beneficial since we got to work on our communication skills with different year groups and had the opportunity to plan our own section of the lesson. This class was one I really enjoyed since I got to go outside while improving my ASC capabilities. The capabilities I worked on this semester was inquisitiveness, leadership, collaboration and communication and I did this by applying myself to my tasks, trying new things and working with my group. Overall, this project was really beneficial for me since it got me outside and interacting with other year groups and learning new things.
