Health First Aid Project

What is first aid?

First aid is the first and immediate assistance for any person with an illness or injury, generally performed by someone with basic medical training. This is usually before regular medical aid can be obtained.

What do you believe should be in your home first aid?

First aid is super important and should be regarded exceptionally seriously so, there are many different parts that I value as highly crucial. In regard to myself, both my parents are doctors so they would have a first aid kit which is a little bit more advanced than usual so, they are able to perform crucial procedures they are qualified for. Some items I believe should be in my home first aid include; disposable gloves, antiseptic solution, band-aids, dressing, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, and tweezers.

Disposable gloves- are essential to keep germs and infections from spreading to you and others, and keep your hands clean. They are also a really convenient item to be able to fit into your home first aid to ensure your hands are clean.

Antiseptic solution- is an essential part of infection control practices and aid in the prevention of spreading germs. Antiseptics are especially helpful for home first aid for common injuries such as cuts, scrapes, or minor burns.

Band-aids- protect the wounded area from rubbing against your clothes and prevent dirt and bacteria from coming in. It also helps to control bleeding and is extremely effective and easy to use.

Dressing- large enough that it can protect wounds from infections and also allow healing. Provides optimum conditions for wound healing.

Antiseptic wipes- are highly beneficial in killing bacteria (99.9%). Also, eliminate viruses and germs from the wounded surface.

Adhesive tapes- help to secure bandages and gauze dressings for minor first aid emergencies, by it’s pressure sensitivity.

Tweezers- able to avoid skin-to-skin contact when changing dressings from the skin, which helps to prevent infections. Also able to grasp small objects humans aren’t able to reach with their fingers.

What are the three most important things you would make sure are in place at the College for first aid and why?

Defibrillator- It is a device that uses electricity to restart the heart or shock it back into its correct rhythm. The heart is a vital organ that you need to work to survive. I believe that one of the most important things that the College needs in its first aid kit is a defibrillator, as without your heart work you will die. If someone’s heart stopped working, it usually causes death within minutes. But a quick treatment with a defibrillator can change this and can be lifesaving. The College must ensure a defibrillator is in the first aid kit.

Teachers trained in first aid- Teachers may be the first responder to medical emergencies, so they may need to perform/know how to treat a common first aid. In W.A. it is required for teachers to be qualified and keep up to date on their first aid training, this may vary from state to state. It is crucial for teachers to perform first aid to promote safety, this also promotes kids to become more proactive. Teachers knowing first aid could be life-saving, and it is important for teachers in All Saints to be qualified and confident in performing first aid.

Health Centre- Health services in schools offer prevention and services to other students, where they can access free and prompt health services at any time at school. Services provided include consultations, health policies, and first aid training. In All Saints, it is crucial, as some students need access to regular physician offices, and some may not be open or need to miss school/work for it. Health centers know advanced protocols and how to deal with extreme situations, and many injuries could occur at school, so it’s vital for All Saints.
