Visual Art – Term 1

Multi Media Mapping Project

We started with a foam board, pins, embroidery thread and a photo-copied map. For my photo-copied map and my final map, I chose to do Asia. The reason I chose to do Asia was because my mum is originally from South Korea and my dad is originally from Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is the first and only place that I have ever been so it seemed only fitting that I chose Asia that included Sri Lanka and I could write about my holiday there.

This is my final project:

I actually quite enjoyed this project. I think it was really creative and I liked how there is also an element of writing in the artwork. As you can see above, I used yellow string with white pins. The reason I used yellow pins was because I think it complemented the yellow outline around China. I chose the white pins because I think it complements the yellow embroidery thread well.

Leading up to my final project, I had to go through 3 tests. We photo-copied our good map and put it on a foam board. These tests helped me come up with the shape that I would use, the colour of embroidery thread and pin and the layout of the writing. Here are some pictures of the three tests:

The Capabilities I Used

Organised:

I think that I worked quite efficiently and I used my time well. I found that I met the targets that were set for me and because of that, I think my artwork ended up looking pretty good.

Inquisitive:

I developed my design 1 step at a time. First I started with picking the map that I would use, then I did some tests, chose the colour of embroidery thread and pins and then I started working on my final product. I think that by doing the work one step at a time, it ensured that my artwork looked finished and nice at the end.

Problem Solving:

One thing that I needed to Problem Solve was the black border. I had a bad habit of writing and pinning on the edge of the corkboard. I got pretty frustrated and then I asked Ms Elscot if I could redo it. That really helped me and from then I was able to do it in a neat way.

Creative:

I think this project was really creative and that is what made it fun. I liked how it was related to maps and map pinning and I learned quite a lot from this project. I also liked how abstract the project was.
