As our final peer support session has just passed, I’ve begun to realise how much I’ve enjoyed this experience over the past semester.
I remember participating in peer support as a year 8 myself, and to finally experience the hard work and commitment it takes to be a peer support leader, I have found that I really admire those who ran it when I was in year 8. Over the past semester, we have built great connections with the younger students, and I have found it extremely fulfilling to be able to talk about my experiences, and provide advice, even through the valuable messages we emphasised through the sessions. I have also felt that being a peer support leader has definitely helped me rely on and open up to others in the year 11 Murdoch cohort, as we have overcome small challenges together, supported each other and have worked as a team for a while now. This experience has proved to be very important as I feel that having to run sessions every week led me to feel accountable to better myself as a leader, and make improvements before the next session. Overall, I have really enjoyed this experience, and acknowledge the the personal growth I have felt over this time period in terms of my confidence and public speaking skills, allowing me to learn new things about myself and my capabilities.
