Basketball Coaching

From 2018 to 2019, I was also an assistant coach of an U/10’s boys basketball team, which meant working with another Senior School Student to help coach this basketball team. Neither of us had worked together before, so we both had to adapt to each other’s teaching and solve a lot to overcome different challenges. As we were coaching young boys, we, on many occasions, struggled to maintain their focus and concentration; however, through problem-solving with each other, we developed a range of solutions. One of the ways we combatted this was by finding basketball drills they liked and either incorporating important skills into these drills or using the drill as an incentive at the end for them. We also found that they focussed more after saying that they would have to run laps around the basketball courts if they were particularly disruptive. We also had to be resourceful on game days and delegate different roles, as we both had different strengths. This was evident in the game days, where we both had to rely on one another to do the other job and not second guess the other person’s ability to do that task. This was shown as I usually did the subs, as I would never forget when and which players to take off, and the other Senior School student would talk to the boys on the bench and give them advice.
