The Great Bake-Off

The Great Bake Off was an elective offered to year nine and ten students, purposed to help students to improve their general cooking and baking skills through a series of planned projects, and weekly cooking lessons, two of which were to create a celebration cake and grazing table. This was done through the in-class completion of many recipes, supervised and demonstrated by one of the food teachers at school.

Celebration Cake:

For Our Celebration Cake project, we were tasked with creating a celebration cake for a function which was being held at school, with invited guests and staff. We did this over a few weeks, first creating and freezing the cake, then creating the frosting, and decorations. We did this over many lessons, and it was great for other people to be able to come and eat our cake with us. My main task was to use the cake tools to smooth the cake while Amberley added the icing as that played to both of our strengths.

Grazing Table Task:

The Grazing Table event was a really fun and successful occasion that happened during tutor group at school, where, in pairs, we were able to choose two things to make. In my pair, we chose to make spinach and ricotta rolls, and cinnamon scrolls, both of which turned out really well. At the event, after the whole class had finished making everything, we were able to invite a guest per person to come eat with us, something that everyone enjoyed.

Overall, the Great Bake Off was a really fun, helpful elective that helped me to further develop my cooking skills, and try new and tasty dishes that I will definitely make again.
