Innovat[ED] Term 1 Reflections

The task was to make a roller coaster out of only straws and tape that is safe and runs like a normal roller coaster. I first started to make the tower tall, however, because it was only straws, it wasn’t able to hold up and it started to fall apart. I also shouldn’t have made the structure to tall or steep, since the carriage would just fall off, or the structure would’ve just fallen and it would end up very unstable. Also, instead of just using 2 straws as a track, we could just bunch them up so it is more stable. The carriage was able to run on the track and it was working, but then because of the time and the constant changes, the tall tower kind of collapsed, and fell apart.

I learnt from last week, that we didn’t need to use a lot of tape to make it work, and neither did we need to make it to complicated, so what our team did, is do a basic two straw track with curves turned out to be a success, making it not only do cool turns, but also making it sturdy and resource friendly. I think I used knowledge from the past, teamwork, and flexibility, since with the knowledge, we had last week, we were able to make it work, and with our teamwork, and flexibility, we were able to tackle on hard tasks, and be flexible.

I think I did pretty well. Ryan, and I wasn’t able to make strong thin rods, so we what I did was get all of our failed products, and put it together scrunching it to make a bouncy cushiony pillar, as it helped support heavy objects, since it was putting on less pressure as it is spreading it out the pillar, plus the bounciness, allowed us to counteract the weight of the pencil cases. However, the teacher wanted to make it longer, meaning that the structure was less sturdy, which meant that we had to make the pillars higher, as it can hold it up, but it may not seem like it, as it is too short, making it touch the ground to early. I think I used problem solving, critical thinking, and flexibility since when we couldn’t make strong rods, I used flexibility to do something different, and critical thinking, and creativity to think of something new. I also used problem solving when facing the task of expanding the bridge, which meant the bridge will be weaker, so I had to use problem solving to think of a solution, which is to make the pillar taller, as the pillars are capable of holding it but it just needs height otherwise it hits the ground to early.

I think we did great. We managed to make a bridge, that although didn’t look very strong or beautiful. However, I do think that the strength test was not a fair test. People could’ve put on different weights, that may look very heavy, but are actually really light, so I think that we should’ve put and on the same weights to keep it fair, and reasonable. So I wish we could’ve a better test. I also think that Ryan and I displayed the qualities, communication, flexibility, critical thinking, and problem solving. I think I had used this habits, since I think Ryan and I had a very good rhythm and I think we spoke, and understood each other really well, and we didn’t neglect any ones idea’s. I also think we used flexibility, and problem solving, as when faced with challenges, we were able to be flexible and change our ideas, and solve the problems we had with no problem.
