Strike A Chord, Music Viva Competition 2021

Last year, I joined a group of three other violinists in a program over the holidays, forming our group called Four Strings Violin Quartet. From there on we would perform the 3rd and 4th movement of Lachner’s quartet for four violins, in many competitions . After entering into WAYACOMP and winning a prize we decided to go further and enter Music Viva Australia’s competition, Strike A Chord. This competition took place on a national scale and saw many ensembles from around the world enter the competition. There were over a thousand entries into the comp, only a total of 12 groups being successful to perform in the finals. We were one of the 12. My group ended up being the only successful group from WA. On the 15th of August, we performed on a livestream from the ABC studio in Perth, playing both 3rd and 4th movements of Lachner’s violin quartet for a panelist of 5 professional judges. It was quite daunting as there were more than 500 people watching the livestream at that time, many friends and family also tuning in. We were relieved after performing our pieces, watching all of the other groups play afterwards. There were many participants from the eastern states, a great number in New South Whales and Victoria. Each group had their own unique sound, and listening to each one gave me a better understanding on some techniques and skills that I could incorporate into my own playing. In the end, all of the awards were announced, and the event came to a conclusion. Even though my group didn’t manage to win an award, we still managed to achieve getting into the finals, which is a great accomplishment. In future years, I will attempt to get back into the finals and come back better and with more to give.
