Saving The Great Barrier Reef

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing this letter regarding the great barrier reef, and how some action is needed to be taken to prevent any further harm to this wonderful Natural icon.

We need to protect this because if this ecosystem dies we can’t do many things we would usually rely on. Marine ecosystems will be altered, leaving many fish species to die because of a lack of shelter from larger predators. Then the predators without a source of food are usually going then to die out. If we don’t do something now it’ll affect everyone’s futures.

The government really needs to do something about this because the reef contributes 5-6 Billion dollars a year to tourism, which is about 7% of our tourism. which is a lot considering this is only one tourist destination so with this evidence we must keep looking after this fantastic location for years to come.

Global warming is the main problem with this as it has been affecting the reef since 1995 because of this the reef has lost almost half of its coral. Therefore, we really need to act otherwise in future years there won’t be any left it may not affect us now, but it will affect us later. This causes coral bleaching a worse problem this is caused when coral gets stressed when water is warm and ejects algae it needs to live. If temperatures don’t drop coral will starve and die. The great barrier reef needs time to recover which it is not getting since the water temperatures are constantly rising. The coral will continue to get more stressed as there is a possible massive coral bleaching this year.

Here are some solutions to fix this, to help coral bleaching. We can reduce our carbon footprint because “climate change is the biggest threat to coral reefs” according to the coral reef conservation project.  Also, we can stop using chemical pesticides even though you might live ages away from a coral reef, it can still go into a wasteland and then follow into a coral reef.  We should also have further law enforcement on the Litter act of 1979. That is our principal litter legislation, but it doesn’t seem to be enforced enough considering the amount of litter still around. People don’t think it will affect us, but it will fish will consume tiny bits of plastic and then we will end up eating the fish. Also, consuming plastic isn’t beneficial for aquatic life or us. Eating too much plastic can build up and end up killing you as it will also kill many species of aquatic animals.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule
